Vanderbijlpark, 27 May 2026 – The journey to the Vaal River Carnival 2026 begins today, as the Emfuleni Local Municipality convenes a high-level Marketing Strategic Development Round Table Discussion at the Emerald Casino and Resort in Vanderbijlpark from 10h00 to 13h00. Hosted through the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts, Culture and Library Information Services (SRACLIS), the engagement marks the first major milestone on the road to one of Gauteng’s most anticipated tourism and cultural showcases.
This is the strategic launchpad, where partners from tourism, government, arts, culture and the media start the work of shaping a Carnival with bigger reach, sharper marketing and deeper community impact.
A 22-year Legacy Fuels the Journey Ahead
Since its launch in 2002, the Vaal River Carnival has grown into one of the flagship tourism and cultural programmes of the Emfuleni Local Municipality. The 2025 edition marked 22 years of celebrating the rich heritage, diversity, creativity and tourism potential of the Vaal region; a legacy that now provides the foundation for the road to 2026.
More than an annual festival, the Carnival has become a strategic platform for tourism growth, local economic development, arts and culture promotion, social cohesion and active community participation. Each year it draws thousands of residents and visitors to the riverfront, uniting people from different backgrounds, cultures and generations in a shared celebration of the identity and spirit of the Vaal.
For local businesses, artists, vendors and tourism establishments, the event has consistently delivered tangible returns, opening trade opportunities, expanding exposure for SMMEs, supporting the creative economy, and reinforcing the Vaal’s positioning as a destination of choice within Gauteng.
Setting the Course: The Round Table Discussions
Ahead of the 2026 edition, the Municipality is using the round table as an inclusive platform for stakeholders to share ideas, experiences, opportunities and challenges that will define the path forward. Programme Lineup and Notable Speakers
The morning’s discussion will be facilitated by Ms. Mputle Dikobe, with proceedings opening with the registration of delegates followed by welcome remarks from the MMC for Sports, Recreation, Arts, Library Information Services, Parks and Cemeteries, Cllr Lehlohonolo Malindi. After the introduction of stakeholders and attendees, the Manager for SRACLIS, Mr. Ben Manzi, will set the scene by presenting the purpose and strategic intent of the round table.
The agenda then turns to two anchor presentations:
- Mr. Barba Gaoganediwe from the Gauteng Tourism Authority (GTA) will present on marketing and promotional support, outlining how the province can amplify the Vaal River Carnival through its tourism platforms, campaigns and trade channels.
- Mr. Titus Motlomelo from the Provincial Department of Arts and Culture will share the Annual Plans for 2026/27 for Creative Industries, framing the opportunities for arts integration, programming alignment and creative economy investment around the Carnival.
The session will continue with open inputs and discussion among delegates, the adoption of resolutions and an action plan, and a clear way forward. Ms. Mathebula, Executive Director for Community Services, will deliver the closing remarks.
Gauteng Tourism Authority Charts The provincial Route
The participation of the Gauteng Tourism Authority signals a deliberate alignment between provincial tourism strategy and local event development on the road to 2026. Through Mr. Gaoganediwe’s presentation, the GTA is expected to outline how the Vaal River Carnival can be more deeply integrated into Gauteng’s annual tourism calendar, supported through Visit Gauteng’s marketing platforms, and positioned alongside the province’s other anchor leisure and lifestyle events.
