The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) has launched a new digital media platform ahead of the 2026 local government elections as the country prepares for one of its biggest municipal voting periods in recent years. The new IEC Media App is aimed at accredited journalists and media practitioners covering the elections.

The platform will provide real time election updates, media statements, accreditation services and access to official election information in one place. The launch comes as the IEC also prepares for what it expects could be a sharp increase in candidate registrations ahead of the municipal elections.

Election officials say the system is intended to improve communication, streamline accreditation and strengthen election coverage during the 2026 voting period.

IEC Introduces New Media App for Election Coverage

The Electoral Commission confirmed that the new app has been developed specifically for accredited members of the media ahead of the 2026 local government elections.

According to the IEC, the app will provide:

    • live election updates
    • official media statements
    • event schedules
    • interview coordination
    • podcasts and multimedia content
    • Results Operations Centre accreditation services

The commission says the platform is designed to centralise election communication and reduce delays in distributing official information to journalists.

“The app will also seamlessly facilitate journalist accreditation for the Results Operations Centre ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections,” the IEC said in a statement.

Why the IEC Says the App Is Important

The launch comes as the IEC increases preparations for municipal elections expected later in 2026.

Election officials say the app forms part of broader efforts to:

    • modernise election communication
    • improve public transparency
    • strengthen media access
    • provide faster updates during election periods

The commission believes the digital platform could also help reduce misinformation by ensuring journalists receive verified information directly from the IEC.

The app is expected to become especially important during:

    • candidate registration periods
    • election campaigning
    • voting days
    • results announcements
    • dispute management processes

Candidate Numbers Expected to Rise in 2026 Elections

The IEC says it expects the number of candidates contesting the 2026 elections to exceed the figures recorded during the previous municipal polls.

IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo said prospective candidates are being encouraged to prepare nomination documentation early.

    According to the IEC:

    • more than 100 000 people were nominated during the 2021 local government elections
    • around 95 000 candidates met the final requirements
    • approximately 10 400 council seats were available nationally

IEC deputy chief electoral officer for electoral matters Masego Sheburi said candidate numbers have consistently increased with each election cycle.

“In the 2021 local government elections, just over 100,000 people were nominated,” Sheburi said.

Election analysts believe the 2026 local elections could attract even more independent candidates due to increasing political fragmentation across municipalities.

Gauteng Expected to Play Major Role in Elections

Gauteng is likely to remain one of the country’s most closely watched election battlegrounds due to its population size, economic importance and politically contested metros.

Municipalities expected to draw major political attention include:

    • Johannesburg
    • Tshwane
    • Ekurhuleni

The province has experienced coalition instability, service delivery protests and governance disputes in recent years, making the upcoming elections highly significant for political parties and independent candidates.

Political observers say digital communication tools like the IEC Media App may become increasingly important as election activity intensifies across Gauteng.

    IEC Pushes Voter Participation Campaign

The launch of the app follows the IEC’s broader “Get up. Show up. Vote.” campaign introduced earlier this year.

    The campaign focuses on:

    • voter participation
    • rebuilding public trust
    • improving election technology
    • strengthening election management systems

The IEC has also indicated that it plans to deploy around 70 000 election workers nationally during the local government elections.

Officials believe voter turnout could increase during the upcoming municipal elections compared to previous cycles.

How the New Media App Will Work

According to the IEC, journalists and accredited media practitioners will be able to register and access election services directly through the app.

The platform is expected to include:

    • accreditation application features
    • push notifications for election updates
    • media briefing schedules
    • live election feeds
    • interview requests
    • digital election resources

The app is specifically targeted at media professionals rather than general voters.

The commission says the system is intended to improve efficiency at the Results Operations Centre, where journalists traditionally gather during election periods.

Technology Becoming Central to South African Elections

The IEC’s latest rollout reflects the increasing role of digital technology in election administration and political communication.

South African elections have increasingly relied on:

    • digital voter systems
    • online communication platforms
    • electronic verification tools
    • real time results management
    • social media engagement

Election experts say digital platforms may become even more important during the 2026 municipal elections as parties compete for younger and digitally connected voters.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

For Gauteng residents, the launch signals that preparations for the 2026 local government elections are intensifying.

The province’s metros are expected to remain politically competitive, with coalition politics and service delivery likely to dominate campaigning.

The new media app may also affect how residents receive election updates, as journalists gain faster access to official IEC information during:

    • campaigning
    • voter registration
    • election day
    • vote counting
    • coalition negotiations

Observers say improved communication systems could help reduce confusion and misinformation during high pressure election periods.
