Drink Aware: Staying in Control at Wine Expos, Festivals and Social Events in Gauteng

Gauteng does not really do quiet weekends. There is always a wine expo pouring something new, a food festival taking over a park, a concert filling up an arena, a market that turns into a Sunday session, or a Women’s Month event that runs long because nobody wants to leave. Add spring weather to the mix and the province’s events calendar starts stacking up fast.

Most of those days out involve a drink at some point, and there is nothing wrong with that. Being drink aware in Gauteng is not about skipping the wine tasting or standing awkwardly at the bar with a lemonade you did not want. It is about making the decisions that keep the night yours - how much, how fast, who you are with, and how you are getting home.

This is not a lecture about not drinking. It is about staying in control of a good time.

ALSO READ: Going Out as a Group: How Women Can Look Out for Each Other at Gauteng Events

Why Staying Aware Matters at Gauteng Events

The difference between a great day out and a messy one is usually a decision made hours earlier. Where you parked. Who is driving. Whether you ate. Whether anyone in the group is keeping half an eye on everyone else.

Making those calls before the first glass is poured means you are not trying to solve problems later, when you are tired, the queue for a ride is 40 minutes long, and everyone is bargaining with themselves about whether they are fine to drive.

Decide How You’re Getting Home Before You Drink

Sort out the trip home before you arrive. Not after.

    • Nominate a designated driver and make it non-negotiable for that person.
    • Check that your Uber or Bolt account is set up and your payment method works.
    • Pre-arrange a lift with someone reliable, with a time and a pickup point agreed.
    • Know whether the venue has a safe pickup zone, and where it is.
    • Budget for the ride home the same way you budget for tickets.

The point is simple: nobody makes a good transport decision three drinks in. Make it while you are still deciding what to wear.

If you are relying on e-hailing, our guide to Rideshare Safety in Gauteng: What Every Woman Should Know Before Getting In covers checking the plate, sharing your trip and the small habits worth building.

    Know Your Own Pace

Nobody knows your limits better than you do, and there is no prize for keeping up with the fastest drinker in the group.

Drink slowly. Put the glass down between sips. Skip the round if you do not want one - a real friend will not make it a thing. And be honest with yourself about the point where you stop enjoying it, because that point usually arrives before you admit it.

One thing worth remembering: feeling fine is not the same as being fine to drive. Alcohol affects reaction time and judgement well before you feel obviously drunk, and your own assessment of how sober you are is exactly the thing alcohol makes unreliable.

    Eat Before You Start Drinking

Eat properly before the event, and keep eating during it. Food in your stomach slows the rate at which alcohol is absorbed, which makes a long day of tastings much easier to pace.

At a wine expo or a food festival this is barely a sacrifice - the food is half the reason you are there.

    Keep Water in the Rotation

Outdoor festivals in Gauteng get hot, and between dancing, queuing and walking the length of a venue you lose more than you think. Alternate a glass of water between drinks. It slows your pace, keeps you hydrated and makes the next morning noticeably kinder.

Keep an Eye on Your Drink

Basic drink safety is quick to do and easy to forget:

    • Don’t leave your drink unattended - take it with you or finish it.
    • Be cautious about accepting an open drink from someone you don’t know.
    • If you’ve left a drink alone, get a fresh one. It costs less than the alternative.
    • Keep track of how many you’ve had. Tastings add up quietly.

What Is Drink Spiking and What Should You Do?

Drink spiking is when alcohol or another substance is added to someone’s drink without their knowledge. It can be difficult to spot, because most substances used are colourless and tasteless, and the effects can look a lot like being very drunk.

There is no single symptom that proves a drink has been spiked. But if you or a friend suddenly feel far more affected than the amount you have had would explain - confused, drowsy, dizzy, nauseous or unable to focus - treat it seriously and act early rather than waiting to see.

    What to do:

    • Stay with someone you trust and tell them how you feel.
    • Alert venue staff, security or event medical personnel straight away.
    • Do not leave the venue alone or accept a lift from someone you do not know.
    • Get medical help if symptoms are severe or worsening.
    • Report the incident to the venue and to the SAPS

Spiking is rare enough that it should not colour how you feel about going out. It is just worth knowing what to do.

    Look Out for Your Friends

The group is the safety net. Notice when someone goes quiet, drinks faster than usual, or suddenly seems unwell. Check in properly, not just with a shouted “you okay?” across a table.

If someone is seriously unwell, do not leave them alone and do not assume they will sleep it off. Get venue staff or medics involved - that is what they are there for. And before anyone splits off, make sure every single person has a confirmed way home.

Our piece on Going Out as a Group: How Women Can Look Out for Each Other at Gauteng Events goes deeper on the group check-in habits worth having.

If You’re the Sober Friend, Own It

Being the designated driver is not the same as being the group’s chaperone. You are not there to police anyone’s night.

You are there to drive, to keep a loose eye on the group, to notice if someone needs help, and to make sure nobody gets behind a wheel after drinking. That’s it. And a good group looks after the sober friend too - cover their food, make sure they are having a night out and not doing a shift.

Don’t Drink and Drive - The One Drink Aware Gauteng Rule With No Exceptions

If you are drinking, you are not driving. There is no version of this with a workaround.

South African law currently sets the limit at a blood alcohol concentration below 0.05g per 100ml for general drivers, and below 0.02g per 100ml for professional drivers. The Department of Transport has announced that it is moving to amend the National Road Traffic Act toward a zero-alcohol limit for all drivers, according to
SA news so treat “under the limit” as a legal technicality rather than a plan.

Your options are all easier than a court date:

    • Use the designated driver.
    • Book a rideshare or arrange a lift.
    • Leave the car at the venue or in secure parking and collect it the next day.

And nothing sobers you up faster than time. Not coffee, not a burger, not a cold shower, not a 20-minute nap in the car park. Those things might make you feel more awake. They do nothing to your blood alcohol level.

Don’t Let the End of the Event Undo a Good Day

The last hour is when things get loose. Everyone leaves at once, ride prices surge, the parking area empties out slowly and everyone is tired.

Either leave slightly before the rush or wait it out in a well-lit, staffed area rather than drifting toward a dark parking lot to save ten minutes. Keep your phone charged so you can actually book and track a ride. And do not let impatience push you into a car you would not otherwise get into.

    Alcohol-Free Doesn’t Mean Fun-Free

The alcohol-free menu in Gauteng has come a long way. Mocktails, zero-alcohol wines and craft sodas are on offer at most decent expos and festivals now, and they are not an apology drink.

Plenty of people alternate, plenty attend without drinking at all, and nobody at the table needs an explanation for either. It is your night and your choice.

Know When It’s Time to Go Home

You are allowed to leave. Not because something went wrong, but because you are tired, or your feet hurt, or you have simply had enough.

The best nights out end while they are still good. Reading your own signals and acting on them - instead of pushing through because everyone else is staying - is the whole idea behind Her City. Her Rules.

    WHAT’S ON G TIP: YOUR NIGHT-OUT CHECKLIST

    Before you leave the house:

✓ Know how you’re getting home
✓ Eat before or during the event
✓ Keep water in the rotation
✓ Don’t leave your drink unattended
✓ Check in with your friends
    ✓ Don’t drink and drive
    ✓ Keep your phone charged

Enjoy Gauteng - On Your Terms

Gauteng’s wine expos, festivals, concerts and social events are there to be enjoyed, and being drink aware in Gauteng is not about approaching a night out with a list of fears. It is about a handful of decisions that take five minutes and protect the rest of your day.

Have the wine. Dance at the festival. Stay for the last set if you want to. Just know your pace, keep an eye on your people, and have a plan for getting home.
