Going Out as a Group: How Women Can Look Out for Each Other at Gauteng Events

Gauteng knows how to put on a show. From concerts in Joburg to festivals in Pretoria, wine expos, markets, sports events and everything in between, there’s always somewhere to be - and women across the province are showing up, dressed up and ready for it. Her City, Her Rules is about exactly that: exploring Gauteng on your own terms, with the confidence that comes from knowing your squad has your back.

Because here’s the thing - a great night out isn’t just about the outfit, the playlist or the queue for the good food stall. It’s about the group around you. A few small agreements before you leave the house can mean the difference between a night where everyone’s watching out for each other, and one where everyone’s just hoping for the best.

This isn’t about fear. It’s about women’s safety at events being something a squad builds together, on purpose, before the first drink or the first song.

    Why Your Squad Plan Matters

Most of what makes a night out feel easy has nothing to do with the venue and everything to do with the group. When everyone knows the plan - how you’re getting there, where you’re meeting if you get separated, what happens if someone wants to leave early - you spend less time managing logistics and more time actually enjoying yourselves.

Think of it as a few quick agreements, not a rulebook. That’s the whole idea behind good group safety: a bit of planning up front buys you a lot of freedom later.

Sort Out the Ride Home Before the Event

Don’t wait until the event is winding down to figure out how everyone’s getting home. Before you even leave, decide:

    • Is someone the designated sober driver, or is everyone using rideshare?
    • Are you arriving and leaving together, or is it fine to split up later?
    • Who’s ordering the Uber or Bolt and is everyone comfortable with the plan if the group splits?
    • What happens if one person wants to leave two hours before everyone else?

None of this needs to be complicated - it just needs to be decided. If you haven’t read our guide on event safety tips for getting home safely, it’s worth a look before your next big night out: Rideshare Safety in Gauteng: What Every Woman Should Know Before Getting In

    Choose a Meeting Point

Big Gauteng events mean big crowds, and big crowds mean patchy signal. “I’ll just call you” sounds simple until thousands of other people are trying to use the same network at the same time.

Pick something obvious before you go in - a specific entrance, a food court, a landmark inside the venue, a spot near the main stage. It takes ten seconds to agree on and saves you twenty minutes of wandering around later trying to find each other.

The Buddy System: Simple, Not Restrictive

The buddy system isn’t about women needing permission to go anywhere alone. It’s simply about looking out for each other while you’re going out with friends - heading to the bathroom, grabbing food, stepping outside for air, or moving through a packed crowd.

Sometimes it’s as simple as saying, “I’m going to the bathroom, I’ll be back in five.” That’s it. It keeps everyone in the loop without anyone feeling babysat.

Pay Attention When a Friend Says Something Feels Wrong

Good friends notice things - when someone goes unusually quiet, seems uncomfortable, looks confused, or mentions that someone keeps approaching them. You don’t need to hover over each other all night. You just need to actually listen when someone says something doesn’t feel right, and take it seriously the first time they say it.

Have an “I Want to Leave” Rule

This is one of the simplest and most powerful group rules you can set: if someone says “I want to leave,” the group goes. No explanations required, no convincing anyone that something’s actually wrong.

From there, the group can help however’s needed - walking them out, getting them to a safer or more public space, arranging transport, or just staying with them until the ride arrives. Supportive, not dramatic.

“A night out is only as good as the group that’s got you.”

If Someone Feels Uncomfortable Around Someone Else

If someone in your group says a stranger is making them uncomfortable, believe them straight away. Stay close, move to another area, and loop in venue staff or security if it feels necessary. There’s no need to escalate things unnecessarily - the goal is simply to get your friend somewhere they feel at ease. And nobody owes politeness to someone who’s making them uncomfortable.

What If Someone in Your Group Feels Unwell?

If a friend starts feeling unwell - whether it’s the heat, the crowd, or one too many drinks - don’t leave them alone and don’t assume they just need to “sleep it off.” Get venue staff involved if needed, help them find somewhere safe to sit, and arrange proper transport home.

    Keep Communication Simple

Before the event, make sure everyone in the group has each other’s numbers, the venue name, the agreed meeting point, and the transport plan. That’s it. You don’t need a twenty-item checklist - just enough shared information that nobody’s guessing if plans change.

The Goal Is to Enjoy the Night

None of this is about being cautious instead of having fun. It’s the opposite - a few quick agreements at the start of the night mean your squad can stop thinking about logistics and start actually enjoying the concert, the festival, the market, the dance floor. Staying safe at events and having a brilliant night out aren’t in competition with each other. They go hand in hand.

    Going Out in Gauteng, Together

Whether it’s Gauteng nightlife, a weekend market, a wine expo or a stadium full of noise, Gauteng belongs to the women who show up for it - together. Make the plan, pick the meeting point, listen to each other, and then go have the night you came for.
