Gautrain commuters will soon be able to book rides through a new app based e hailing platform called “Gau Express” as the Gautrain Management Agency prepares to expand beyond rail and buses into Gauteng’s growing mobility market. The service is expected to launch in October 2026 and will operate similarly to Uber and Bolt while integrating directly into the existing Gautrain mobile application.

According to Gautrain Management Agency CEO Tshepo Kgobe, the new service aims to solve one of Gautrain’s biggest transport challenges: helping commuters travel quickly between stations and their final destinations.

The launch signals a major shift for Gautrain as the provincial transport system evolves into a broader mobility platform that includes rail, buses, e hailing services and potentially electric scooters and e bikes in future.

Gautrain Expands Into Gauteng’s E Hailing Industry

Gau Express will allow passengers to request rides directly through the Gautrain app without downloading a separate platform.

The service will operate across Gauteng and will not be limited only to Gautrain stations.

According to Kgobe, commuters will be able to:

    • request rides through the app
    • choose pickup and drop off locations
    • view pricing before confirming trips
    • pay digitally through the app
    • use funds loaded onto Gautrain cards

The Gautrain Management Agency said the service is intended to improve “last mile” connectivity for commuters who require faster and more flexible transport options.

Kgobe said many commuters struggle to move efficiently between stations, workplaces, residential areas and surrounding transport hubs.

Discounted Fares Planned for Gautrain Passengers

One of the key features of Gau Express will be discounted pricing for passengers already using Gautrain rail services.

According to Gautrain officials, the system will recognise when users travel on Gautrain trains and automatically apply reduced fares for linked e hailing trips.

The model is expected to operate similarly to Gautrain’s existing bus integration system.

Officials say the pricing structure is designed to strengthen public transport usage while encouraging commuters to remain within the Gautrain transport ecosystem.

    How Gau Express Will Work

According to Gautrain Management Agency CEO Tshepo Kgobe, Gau Express will operate as an integrated e hailing feature inside the existing Gautrain mobile app rather than as a separate platform.

Here’s how the service is expected to work once it launches in October 2026.

Step 1: Open the Gautrain App

Passengers will use the current Gautrain app already used for:

    • train tickets
    • bus services
    • card management
    • travel planning

A new Gau Express section will be added inside the app.

    Step 2: Request a Ride

    Users will be able to:

    • enter their pickup location
    • select their destination
    • view nearby available drivers
    • receive estimated fares before booking

The system will use geolocation technology similar to Uber and Bolt.

    Step 3: Integrated Gautrain Discounts

One of the biggest differences is that the app will recognise whether a commuter has already used the Gautrain train service.

If linked to a Gautrain journey:

    • passengers may automatically receive discounted e hailing fares
    • pricing may work similarly to Gautrain bus discounts

Officials say this is designed to strengthen “last mile” transport between stations and final destinations.

    Step 4: Payment Options

Passengers will reportedly have multiple payment methods available:

    • bank cards
    • digital payments inside the app
    • Gautrain card balances

This means users may be able to pay for:

    • trains
    • buses
    • Gau Express rides

all within the same transport ecosystem.

    Step 5: Branded Gautrain Vehicles

Vehicles used for Gau Express are expected to feature:

    • Gautrain gold branding
    • blue strip detailing
    • Gautrain logos

The branding is intended to make vehicles easily identifiable to commuters.

Gau Express Will Not Be Limited to Gautrain Stations

Unlike current Gautrain buses, the service will not only operate around stations.

    According to Gautrain officials:

    • commuters will also be able to request rides from other locations across Gauteng
    • the system is intended to function as a broader mobility platform

This means Gau Express could compete directly with:

    • Uber
    • Bolt
    • meter taxis

    across parts of Gauteng.

Future Plans Include Scooters and E Bikes

The launch of Gau Express may only be the beginning of Gautrain’s broader mobility ambitions.

Kgobe said the agency is exploring future transport options including:

    • electric scooters
    • e bikes
    • smaller electric vehicles

These additions would aim to improve short distance travel and reduce commuter dependence on private vehicles.

Transport analysts say integrated mobility systems are becoming increasingly important in large urban provinces where congestion, transport reliability and commuter safety remain ongoing concerns.

Gautrain Expansion Plans Continue Across Gauteng

The e hailing launch forms part of Gautrain’s broader long term expansion strategy.

Earlier in 2026, Gautrain published details of its proposed 15 year rail expansion plan which includes multiple new stations and route extensions across Gauteng.

    Proposed future stations include:

    • Soweto
    • Mamelodi
    • Springs
    • Atteridgeville
    • Fourways
    • Roodepoort
    • Lanseria
    • Samrand
    • Sunninghill
    • Olievenhoutbosch

The expansion project will reportedly involve:

    • approximately 44km of underground tunnels
    • around 7km of elevated viaducts
    • a new connection to Lanseria Airport

If completed, Lanseria would become the second airport directly connected to the Gautrain network.

Gautrain Now Fully Controlled by Gauteng Government

The transport expansion comes after Gautrain officially moved fully under the oversight of the Gauteng Provincial Government earlier in 2026 following the exit of private owners.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi previously described Gautrain as a strategic provincial asset valued at between R45 billion and R52 billion.

Provincial authorities say the next phase of expansion aims to maximise Gautrain’s long term value while improving connectivity across major urban and economic corridors.

Gau Express Launches Amid Tightening E Hailing Regulations

The launch of Gau Express also comes during major regulatory changes affecting South Africa’s e hailing industry.

Following implementation of the National Land Transport Amendment Act, e hailing companies now face stricter operating requirements.

    Under the updated regulations:

    • operators must register with transport authorities
    • drivers must display platform branding
    • panic buttons are required
    • geographic operating zones apply
    • unlicensed operators may face penalties

Industry analysts say the new regulatory environment is reshaping competition within Gauteng’s transport market while increasing compliance demands for operators.

Gautrain Could Challenge Uber and Bolt in Gauteng

Transport analysts say Gau Express could become a significant competitor within Gauteng’s e hailing market because of its direct integration with public transport infrastructure.

Unlike traditional e hailing platforms, Gautrain already operates:

    • rail services
    • feeder buses
    • commuter infrastructure
    • station networks
    • transport payment systems

The addition of app based e hailing could strengthen Gautrain’s position as a fully integrated urban mobility provider.

Officials say the long term vision is to create seamless movement between trains, buses and on demand transport options across the province.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

For Gauteng residents, Gau Express could expand transport choices while improving commuter flexibility across major urban areas.

    The service may benefit:

    • daily Gautrain commuters
    • business travellers
    • airport passengers
    • students
    • workers travelling between transport hubs

Integrated pricing and app based payments may also simplify commuting for residents already using Gautrain services.

    The expansion could additionally create:

    • new driving opportunities
    • transport sector jobs
    • increased competition in the e hailing market
    • improved last mile transport access
