Bolt South Africa has officially launched a new electric vehicle ride hailing category, with Johannesburg expected to become the next major rollout city after Cape Town. The move introduces fully electric cars into South Africa’s growing e hailing market as fuel prices, transport costs and electricity concerns continue affecting commuters across Gauteng.

The company says electric vehicles could lower operating costs for drivers while creating cleaner and quieter transport systems. However, Bolt has not confirmed whether Gauteng commuters will actually pay less for rides once the EV category launches in Johannesburg.

The rollout comes as electric vehicles gain momentum globally, although affordability, charging infrastructure and electricity reliability remain major concerns in South Africa.

Bolt Launches Electric Vehicle Category in South Africa

Bolt confirmed that its EV category officially launched in Cape Town on 18 May 2026 through a partnership with mobility company YugoRide.

The company said Johannesburg forms part of its next phase expansion plans as Bolt pushes to scale the category to 500 electric vehicles nationwide by December 2026.

Bolt currently operates electric ride categories in more than 70 cities globally.

According to Regional Director Caroline Wanjihia, South Africa remains one of the company’s most important markets internationally.

What Type of Electric Cars Are Being Used?

While Bolt has not yet publicly confirmed the full vehicle lineup for Johannesburg, the EV category uses fully electric battery powered vehicles known as BEVs, or Battery Electric Vehicles.

Unlike hybrid vehicles, these cars run entirely on rechargeable battery systems and do not require petrol or diesel.

    Electric vehicles operate using:

    • Rechargeable lithium batteries
    • Electric motors instead of petrol engines
    • Regenerative braking systems
    • Charging ports connected to the electricity grid

According to the EV guide, modern electric vehicles now commonly offer ranges between 300km and 500km on a single charge, depending on the model and driving conditions.

That range is considered sufficient for many urban ride hailing drivers operating within cities like Johannesburg and Pretoria.

How Electric Cars Could Change Ride Hailing in Gauteng

Electric vehicles could significantly change how e hailing operates in Gauteng, particularly because fuel remains one of the largest expenses for drivers.

According to the company, EVs may help lower:

    • Daily fuel costs
    • Vehicle maintenance expenses
    • Engine servicing costs
    • Urban transport emissions
    • Driver operating expenses

Electric cars have fewer moving parts than traditional petrol vehicles, meaning drivers may spend less on repairs, oil changes and engine maintenance.

Experts also say EVs are generally quieter and smoother for passengers.

But Will Bolt Rides Actually Become Cheaper?

One of the biggest unanswered questions is whether commuters will see lower ride prices.

Bolt did not confirm pricing changes during the launch announcement.

However, the company stated that electric mobility may improve efficiency and lower operational costs for drivers.

Transport analysts say cheaper rides may depend on several factors, including:

    • Electricity costs
    • Charging infrastructure availability
    • Fleet financing models
    • Battery replacement costs
    • Demand in Gauteng
    • Load reduction impacts

Although electricity can be cheaper than petrol over time, South Africa’s rising electricity tariffs and power interruptions may complicate the savings equation.

Johannesburg’s Electricity Problems Could Affect EV Rollout

Unlike many international cities rapidly adopting EVs, Gauteng faces additional infrastructure challenges linked to:

    • Load reduction
    • Power outages
    • Grid pressure
    • Charging reliability
    • Electricity pricing increases

Industry experts say charging infrastructure remains one of the biggest barriers to EV expansion in South Africa.

Bolt and YugoRide say the rollout depends heavily on building a broader support ecosystem that includes charging stations and operational infrastructure.

Could Bolt Drivers Earn More With EVs?

Bolt says electric vehicles may create “more sustainable earning opportunities” for drivers.

The reason is simple: lower running costs could potentially improve driver profitability.

According to EV industry research, drivers typically spend significantly less on energy compared to petrol powered vehicles.

Electric vehicles also avoid costs linked to:

    • Oil changes
    • Spark plug replacements
    • Traditional engine servicing

However, experts say drivers may still face challenges around:

    • Vehicle rental costs
    • Battery degradation
    • Charging downtime
    • Insurance costs
    • Access to charging stations

Uber South Africa previously launched Uber Electric using a rental model that required weekly driver payments for vehicles and charging.

Bolt has not yet confirmed whether a similar model will apply in Johannesburg.

Why Gauteng Could Become Bolt’s Biggest EV Market

Although Cape Town launched first, Gauteng could eventually become Bolt’s most important electric mobility market due to population size and commuter demand.

Johannesburg and Pretoria remain among South Africa’s busiest e hailing regions because of:

    • Long commuting distances
    • Heavy traffic congestion
    • Business travel demand
    • Large urban populations
    • Limited public transport reliability

Transport analysts say electric ride hailing may become increasingly attractive if fuel prices continue rising.

    EV Adoption Is Growing Worldwide

Globally, electric vehicle adoption has accelerated rapidly over the past few years.

According to Bolt’s EV mobility guide:

    • 14% of new cars sold globally in 2022 were electric
    • Many car manufacturers are moving away from petrol vehicles
    • Public charging infrastructure continues expanding internationally

Countries worldwide are increasingly investing in electric mobility to reduce emissions and lower dependence on fossil fuels.

However, South Africa’s transition remains slower due to infrastructure and affordability concerns.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

For Gauteng residents, Bolt’s EV expansion could eventually introduce:

    • Cleaner transport options
    • Quieter ride experiences
    • Potentially lower ride costs
    • Reduced fuel related pricing pressure
    • New transport technology jobs

The rollout may also increase demand for:

    • EV charging stations
    • Battery support services
    • Urban charging infrastructure
    • Green mobility investment

However, the success of electric ride hailing in Gauteng may depend heavily on electricity reliability and charging accessibility.
