Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital Digitises 800,000 Patient Records in Landmark Healthcare Transformation Initiative

Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital (CHBAH), Africa’s largest healthcare facility, is leading a significant digital transformation by digitising over 800,000 patient records. This project, in partnership with Microsoft and Mint Group, marks a crucial milestone in the modernisation of Gauteng’s healthcare services. The initiative not only sets a new benchmark for South African healthcare but also paves the way for further digital advancements in the country’s public health system.

Transforming Patient Record Management at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital

Historically, Baragwanath Hospital managed its vast patient record archive through paper files. This led to numerous challenges including storage issues, slow retrieval times, and data security risks. This new digital system replaces manual processes with secure electronic records that are easily accessible and searchable on Microsoft’s Cloud infrastructure.

Anele Apleni, CIO of the Gauteng Department of Health, also highlighted the broader benefits of this project. “The integration of paper-based files into a secure digital format is a major step forward for Gauteng’s healthcare system,” Apleni said. “This initiative will empower both citizens and healthcare facilities. Citizens will have greater control and access to their medical histories, regardless of which Gauteng hospital they visit. Healthcare facilities will benefit from improved data accuracy, faster information retrieval and the ability to deliver more co-ordinated care.”

    ITWeb, 2025

The shift to digital enables medical staff to instantly access patient histories, test results, and other critical medical data. As a result, the hospital’s workflow has improved. This contributes to faster clinical decision-making, reduced waiting times, and improved overall patient care.

Dr. Nthabiseng Makgana, the CEO of CHBAH, highlighted how this transformation will modernise hospital operations and improve the quality of healthcare services. She emphasised that the integration of advanced technologies will play a key role in enhancing service delivery.

The Role of Mint Group in the Digitisation Process

Mint Group, a leading technology solutions provider, plays an essential role in the digitisation process. They are overseeing the conversion of physical patient files into digital formats. By utilising Microsoft’s cloud technology, Mint Group ensures the system is compliant with healthcare regulations while maintaining the highest standards of accuracy.

The successful completion of this project will establish a replicable model for digital transformation within the South African healthcare sector. The project’s impact will be documented in a compelling video series released throughout the year, showcasing the dedication of all stakeholders and the positive outcomes achieved. Carel du Toit, CEO of Mint Group, concludes, “This project goes beyond just digitizing records. By creating these employment opportunities for young South Africans, we’re not only empowering them but also contributing to a more efficient and equitable healthcare system for all citizens.”

    Mint Group

The process involves data cleaning, sorting, scanning, and classification to ensure the integrity of patient information. The partnership also focuses on meeting healthcare compliance standards. This ensures that the data remains protected while being easily accessible for medical professionals.

Empowering Local Youth Through Digital Skills Development

An exciting feature of this project is its focus on youth employment and skills development. Approximately 100 young South Africans, primarily from local communities, have been hired to assist with the digitisation efforts. These individuals are gaining valuable experience in data management and digital technologies. Many of them are set to take leadership roles as the project expands to other Gauteng hospitals.

“We at the Department of Health are excited to partner with Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and Mint on this transformative project,” said Lesiba Arnold Malotana, Acting Head of Department at the Gauteng Department of Health. “This initiative aligns perfectly with our commitment to empowering young South Africans and fostering innovation within the healthcare sector. Creating these 100 new positions will not only improve patient care through efficient data management but also equip young people with valuable skills for the future.”

    Mint Group, 2024

This initiative supports the broader goal of creating job opportunities and providing digital skills training for the youth. This can contribute to long-term socio-economic development in Gauteng.

    Provincial Healthcare Digitisation Expansion

Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital serves as a model for other healthcare institutions in South Africa. The Gauteng Department of Health has announced an ambitious plan to digitise millions of patient records across all 37 hospitals in the province within the next three years. This will extend the benefits of digital healthcare systems throughout Gauteng. It will improve efficiency and the overall quality of healthcare services.

Over the next 36 months, we’re digitising at least 800 million patient records across all 37 Gauteng hospitals. 🏥💻

MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko outlined plans to digitise the records of all public hospitals in the province within 36 months. This is a key part of the province’s larger initiative to modernise public healthcare. The move is expected to eliminate administrative inefficiencies, strengthen data integrity, and ultimately enhance service delivery.

Improving Healthcare Data Management and Public Health Services

The ongoing digitisation effort across Gauteng’s public healthcare system will significantly enhance service delivery. This will address the issues of inefficiency and data mismanagement. With digital records, healthcare professionals will have access to more accurate patient data. This will help improve diagnosis and treatment outcomes. The system will also improve patient monitoring, resource allocation, and epidemiological tracking.

Moreover, the use of cloud technology ensures that sensitive patient information remains secure, with strong privacy protections in place. This digital shift also lays the groundwork for the integration of future technologies such as telemedicine and AI-assisted diagnostics, further advancing South African healthcare.

A Model of Innovation in South African Healthcare

The digitisation project at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital offers an innovative model for South African healthcare. The hospital’s approach to reducing paper usage and implementing cloud technology sets a powerful example for others. Involving youth in the process also adds to its impact. The lessons learned from this initiative, which are being documented in a video series, will inspire similar projects across South Africa.

    YouTube

By blending technology and community development, this project is not only modernising healthcare infrastructure but also creating valuable opportunities for local communities. It demonstrates how digitalisation can lead to improved healthcare data management, better patient outcomes, and enhanced data privacy while fostering digital skills among young South Africans.

    Digital Healthcare as the Future

The transition from manual to digital systems in healthcare represents a significant paradigm shift in service delivery. The implementation of instant access to patient records and enhanced communication between providers creates a transformative moment. It lays the foundation for telemedicine and AI-assisted healthcare in the South African healthcare sector.

Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital’s efforts are part of a broader movement toward more efficient, secure, and accessible healthcare. It sets an example for how technology can drive long-term improvements in healthcare services.

Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital’s digitalisation of over 800,000 patient records highlights the Gauteng government’s commitment to improving healthcare services through technology. This project sets an important precedent for other hospitals in South Africa. It demonstrates how digital systems can enhance patient care, improve data management, and offer new opportunities for local youth. As this initiative expands across Gauteng, it will not only modernise healthcare but also provide crucial digital skills. These will benefit the region’s workforce for years to come.
