Johannesburg is gearing up for one of its most forward-thinking gatherings as TEDx Johannesburg Countdown comes to Nirox Sculpture Park on 25 October 2025. The event will unite global thinkers, South African innovators, and creative leaders who are shaping a more sustainable future.

This year’s edition is not a conventional conference. It’s a living conversation that merges art, science, and community action. Through storytelling, performance, and innovation, it calls on Gauteng residents to rethink how they engage with the planet and its people.

    What Countdown Represents

The TED Countdown movement began as a global platform for accelerating climate action through ideas that inspire real change. Each host city tailors its edition to its own local reality, ensuring that global lessons meet local challenges.

TEDx Johannesburg’s Countdown brings that mission to the African continent. It explores how South Africans can turn creativity, technology, and indigenous knowledge into tools for environmental progress.

The 2025 theme, “To a Greener, Fairer, Thriving Future,” reflects this fusion of science and spirit. It’s about advancing innovation while ensuring that justice and inclusion remain at the heart of sustainability.

From the City to the Cradle

The two-day event begins in Sandton, where discussions centre on sustainable business, green finance, and climate-conscious technology. The following day moves to Nirox Sculpture Park in the Cradle of Humankind, where nature provides the setting for reflection and discovery.

Visitors will stroll through art installations and water gardens while listening to talks about renewable energy, waste transformation, and traditional ecological knowledge.

Nirox’s open landscapes and sculptural gardens offer more than a backdrop—they invite participants to slow down and reconnect with the ground beneath their feet. It’s a reminder that the path to climate action starts not in boardrooms, but in the soil and communities around us.

    Local Voices with Global Reach

The event’s speaker line-up features some of South Africa’s most visionary thinkers, activists, and creatives. Together, they represent a fusion of intellect, imagination, and real-world experience.

Crispian Olver maps new approaches to climate leadership.
Lebogang Mulaisi champions the rights of workers in a changing green economy.
Clyde Mallinson outlines pathways for South Africa’s renewable energy future.
Viaksha Mohabir analyses the nation’s role in global energy transitions.
Leanne Emery-Hunter explores financial models for climate resilience.
Gamuchirai Mutezo transforms waste into energy and opportunity.
Taylen Reddy advocates for youth voices in environmental and mental health justice.
Tebogo Makhubela draws lessons from ancestral traditions for climate adaptation.
Charles Mpofu discusses wetlands as vital ecological sentinels.
Jen Van Den Bussche promotes dignity and sustainability in water systems.
Sifiso Gumbi shares his journey from waste picker to environmental leader.
Leonie Joubert uses storytelling to drive climate awareness.
Nokulinda Mkhize blends ancestral knowledge with modern sustainability.
Johan Thom explores meaning and connection through soil and water art.

These voices form a powerful network of ideas rooted in African experience and shaped by a global vision.

    Performance and Activism Intertwined

Countdown will also include immersive performances that turn art into advocacy.

In Rhythms of a Fragile Planet, Christophe Fellay and Thulisile Binda combine percussion, ambient sound, and narrative to portray Earth’s delicate balance.

Performance artist Oupa Sibeko brings Inland Ocean, a sensory reflection on water scarcity and memory.

Musicians Muneyi and Itai Hakim add emotional depth with live performances that weave folklore, spirituality, and environmental storytelling.

At Nirox, where art and nature intersect, these performances transform learning into experience. They remind audiences that climate change is not only a scientific issue—it is deeply human.

A South African Story in a Global Conversation

TEDx Johannesburg Countdown is one of only eighteen official TED Countdown Anchor Events worldwide. It follows the Countdown Summit in Nairobi, continuing Africa’s leadership in sustainability dialogue.

The Johannesburg event connects local voices to global milestones, including the G20 Climate Meetings in Johannesburg and COP30 in Belém, Brazil. Ideas born here in Gauteng will travel far beyond its borders, showing how African innovation can influence global climate solutions.

    Nirox: Where Reflection Meets Action

Set in the Kromdraai Valley, Nirox Sculpture Park is both a sanctuary and a stage. The non-profit foundation behind the park supports artistic expression while conserving natural landscapes.

All proceeds from Countdown will sustain Nirox’s ongoing projects, such as the Villa-Legodi Center for Sculpture, the Kromdraai Impact Hub, and local artist residencies that empower creators and nearby communities.

Visitors can expect open-air seating on hay bales, shaded picnic spaces, and locally sourced refreshments. Families are encouraged to attend and experience the harmony between art, learning, and nature.

    Why This Gathering Matters

South Africa faces a unique convergence of environmental vulnerability and social inequality. Addressing one without the other is no longer an option.

TEDx Johannesburg Countdown is a call for collective action, one that unites scientists, storytellers, policymakers, and citizens. It challenges everyone to use their skills, culture, and creativity to tackle climate challenges head-on.

By merging technology with ancestral knowledge and policy with performance, the event shows that sustainable transformation grows from collaboration and courage.

Each participant becomes part of a mosaic of solutions—a living example of how diversity drives innovation and resilience.

    From Ideas to Action

Johannesburg has always been a city that reinvents itself, and Countdown carries that same spirit forward.

Every discussion and performance at Nirox Sculpture Park on 25 October 2025 is an invitation to act: to plant, to protect, to rethink, and to rebuild.

The journey to a sustainable world starts with imagination and participation. Entrepreneurs, artists, students, and families alike are encouraged to join and contribute their voices.

Bring a hat, a picnic blanket, and an open mind. Let the landscape and the ideas remind you that climate change is not just a global crisis, it’s a human story that begins right here in Gauteng.
