The 2026 National Senior Certificate final examinations begin on Tuesday, 13 October, with matric pupils across Gauteng and the rest of South Africa preparing to write their first papers. Computer Applications Technology Paper 1 Practical and several language papers will open the examination period, followed by Information Technology Paper 1 Practical on Wednesday, 14 October. With the matric exams now days away, education experts are advising pupils to focus on targeted revision, past papers, time management and adequate sleep instead of relying on last-minute cramming.
The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has strengthened security measures for the 2026 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations, which begin on Tuesday, 13 October, following irregularities identified in the previous matric exams cycle. Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube confirmed the measures on Sunday, 11 October 2026, as 962 832 registered candidates across South Africa, including Gauteng, prepare for the examinations. The department has introduced stricter controls over examination materials, increased oversight of officials and activated a reporting hotline to protect the integrity of the examinations.
Gauteng Grade 12 learners will begin their 2026 preliminary examinations on Tuesday, 25 August, with the provincial timetable running until Friday, 18 September.
