Gauteng Matric Prelims 2026: Exam Dates, Timetable and Study Tips for Grade 12 Learners

Gauteng Grade 12 learners will begin their 2026 preliminary examinations on Tuesday, 25 August, with the provincial timetable running until Friday, 18 September. The exams come as matric pupils enter the final stretch before the National Senior Certificate examinations, which begin nationally in October. While matric prelims are not national examinations, they provide an important opportunity for learners to test their preparation, identify weak areas, and adjust their study strategies before the final papers.

The Department of Basic Education has stressed that preparatory examinations are provincially set and administered, meaning dates can differ between provinces.

    When Gauteng Matric Prelims Start

The Gauteng preparatory examination period begins on Tuesday, 25 August 2026 and ends on Friday, 18 September 2026.

Learners start with English First Additional Language and Afrikaans First Additional Language on 25 August.

Life Sciences Paper 1 follows on 26 August, while Business Studies Paper 1 is scheduled for 27 August.

Accounting learners write Paper 1 on 28 August and Paper 2 on 31 August.

September Brings a Packed Exam Schedule

The timetable continues through September with several major subjects.

Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy and Technical Mathematics learners write Paper 1 on Friday, 4 September, followed by Paper 2 on Monday, 7 September.

History Paper 1 and Geography Paper 2 follow on 8 and 9 September respectively, with Tourism scheduled for 10 September.

Physical Sciences and Technical Sciences Paper 1 are scheduled for 11 September, with the second papers following on 14 September.

    The final stretch includes:

    • Business Studies Paper 2 on 15 September
    • History Paper 2 on 16 September
    • Economics Paper 2 on 17 September
    • Life Sciences Paper 2 on 18 September

    Prelims Are Not National Exams

The Department of Basic Education has made it clear that preliminary examinations are not national examinations.

Instead, provinces set and administer their own preparatory timetables.

The national NSC examinations are different and follow a single national timetable. The Department of Basic Education’s 2026 timetable shows that written NSC exams begin in October.

That distinction matters because prelims are primarily designed to prepare learners for the pressure, format and workload of the final examinations.

How Learners Can Use Prelims to Prepare for Finals

The Department of Basic Education recommends preparing early and breaking study material into manageable sections rather than attempting to cover large amounts of work at once.

Learners are also encouraged to use previous examination papers when revising.

According to the department, past papers help learners identify what they already understand and where more revision is needed.

A practical preparation plan should include:

    • A daily study timetable for each subject
    • Previous exam papers completed under timed conditions
    • Regular revision of weaker topics
    • Short study sessions with planned breaks
    • Enough sleep, food and water
    • Time to review mistakes after each practice paper

The department also provides Grade 10 to Grade 12 self study guides containing notes, examples, problem solving exercises and solutions.

Mind the Gap Guides Can Help With Revision

Grade 12 learners can also use the Department of Basic Education’s Mind the Gap study guides.

The resources are aligned with the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement and are intended to support matric learners preparing for the NSC examinations.

Subjects covered include Mathematics and several other high enrolment matric subjects.

Learners should use the guides alongside their school notes, textbooks, examination guidelines and previous papers rather than relying on a single source.

How to Approach the Exam Room

Preparation is not only about studying content.

The Department of Basic Education advises learners to arrive prepared with the correct stationery and to read instructions carefully before answering questions.

    Time management is also critical.

Learners should consider the marks allocated to each question and avoid spending too much time on one difficult section while leaving other questions unanswered.

Where possible, learners should return to difficult questions after completing sections they are more confident about.

What Prelim Results Can Tell Learners

A disappointing prelim result does not automatically determine how a learner will perform in the final NSC examinations.

Instead, the results can highlight specific problems before the final examination period.

Learners should look at whether marks were lost because of:

    • Gaps in subject knowledge
    • Poor time management
    • Misreading questions
    • Leaving questions unanswered
    • Weak examination technique
    • Insufficient revision

The goal should be to identify patterns and correct them before the final examinations begin.

    Understanding Matric Pass Levels

Learners should also understand that passing matric and qualifying for further study are not the same thing.

For admission to bachelor’s degree studies, the Department of Basic Education states that learners generally need an NSC with at least 30 percent in the language of learning and teaching, together with an achievement rating of 4, which is 50 percent to 59 percent or higher, in four recognised 20-credit subjects.

Diploma admission generally requires an achievement rating of 3, or at least 40 percent, in four recognised 20-credit subjects, together with the required language result.

Universities and individual programmes can set additional subject and performance requirements, meaning learners should check the requirements for the course they want to study.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

For Gauteng families with Grade 12 learners, the next few weeks will be a critical preparation period.

Parents and guardians can support learners by helping create a quiet study environment, reducing unnecessary distractions and encouraging consistent routines rather than last minute cramming.

Learners should also use the prelim period as a rehearsal for the final NSC exams, paying attention not only to marks but also to how they manage pressure, time and difficult questions.

Schools close for the third term on 23 September 2026, according to the official public school calendar.

The Department of Basic Education’s official 2026 timetable shows that the written National Senior Certificate examinations begin in October.

Where can learners find past matric exam papers?

The Department of Basic Education provides previous NSC examination papers online for revision and preparation.

What is the best way to prepare for prelims?

Learners should create a realistic timetable, use previous papers, revise weaker topics, manage their time during practice sessions and maintain healthy sleep and eating habits. The Department of Basic Education also provides free self study and Mind the Gap resources.

With Gauteng’s matric prelims beginning on 25 August, Grade 12 learners have entered one of the most important preparation periods of the school year.
