October brings a full calendar of Pride Month events to Gauteng, with LGBTQ+ communities and allies gathering across Johannesburg, Sandton, Centurion and Maboneng during the month. Major events include Pretoria Pride on 10 October and Johannesburg Pride on 31 October, alongside community, entertainment, fashion and empowerment events throughout the province.

While Pride Month is commonly observed internationally in June, October has particular significance in South Africa. The country traditionally marks Pride during October in recognition of Johannesburg’s first Pride march, which took place on 13 October 1990.

For Gauteng residents and visitors, the 2026 calendar combines that history with a series of events taking place throughout the province.

Why South Africa celebrates Pride in October

Internationally, Pride Month is most commonly associated with June, particularly in countries including the United States, Canada, France and Ireland. June is linked to the Stonewall uprising of 1969 and the Pride marches that followed. Pasted text

South Africa has its own Pride history.

Johannesburg’s first Pride march took place on 13 October 1990. Participants included activists such as Simon Nkoli, Edwin Cameron and Bev Ditsie, as well as members of the Gay and Lesbian Organisation of the Witwatersrand.

The march took place in Hillbrow during South Africa’s political transition. According to the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, some participants covered their faces because they feared being publicly identified.

More than three decades later, Johannesburg Pride remains part of Gauteng’s October calendar.

Organisers say Johannesburg Pride has now reached 37 years of activity and continues to combine celebration with LGBTQ+ visibility and advocacy.

What Pride means in South Africa

Pride in South Africa exists within a constitutional framework that explicitly protects people against unfair discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

Section 9 of the Constitution states that everyone is equal before the law and entitled to equal protection and benefit of the law. It also prohibits the state from unfairly discriminating against anyone on several listed grounds, including sexual orientation.

South Africa also became the first country in Africa to legally recognise same sex marriage when the Civil Union Act came into effect in 2006. The Act provides for civil unions through either marriage or civil partnership.

Pride events therefore sit within a wider South African history of constitutional equality, LGBTQ+ activism and continuing conversations around discrimination, safety and inclusion.

In Gauteng, much of that history is closely connected to Johannesburg.

The event is scheduled to begin at 09:00, with the Pride Parade starting at 12:00.

Johannesburg Pride builds towards 31 October

Johannesburg Pride forms part of a wider Pride of Africa programme running throughout October.

The programme includes social events, an empowerment summit, fashion and creative events before culminating in the Johannesburg Pride march and festival on 31 October.

    Confirmed programme dates include:

3 October: Pride Month opening event

    10 October: SCRT Venue

    16 October: emPOWERment Summit

    24 October: Queer Met

    31 October: Johannesburg Pride

The official Pride of Africa programme describes the emPOWERment Summit as an event bringing together community members, professionals and corporate participants, while Queer Met focuses on fashion and queer creative expression.

Johannesburg Pride takes over Sandton on 31 October

The main Johannesburg Pride event takes place on Saturday, 31 October 2026, in Sandton Central.

The official Johannesburg Pride information lists Katherine Street as the location for the 2026 Pride Village and march.

The parade is scheduled to leave at 14:00.

The published route covers approximately 2.2 kilometres and is expected to take between 60 and 90 minutes.

Johannesburg Pride is free to attend, although registration is available through the official Pride platform.

The event brings the month’s programme together with a Pride Village, entertainment, stalls and the annual march through Sandton.

Another Pride linked event takes place in Johannesburg on the same weekend.

Gauteng’s Pride calendar extends beyond one parade

The 2026 calendar shows that Pride activities in Gauteng are not limited to the major Johannesburg march.

Pretoria Pride brings the programme to Centurion earlier in the month, while Johannesburg hosts several events across entertainment, community engagement, fashion and empowerment.

Johannesburg Pride organisers describe their wider platform as extending beyond the annual march to include community networks, advocacy and opportunities for LGBTQ+ people to connect.

For visitors, this also means different Pride experiences are available across Gauteng during October rather than on a single weekend.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

October gives Gauteng residents several opportunities to attend Pride events across Johannesburg and Tshwane.

Those planning to attend should check individual event information before travelling because venues, schedules, ticket availability and entry requirements can change.

Pretoria Pride requires tickets, while Johannesburg Pride lists free entry with registration available. Some associated events during the month have their own ticketing arrangements.

Visitors travelling to the Johannesburg Pride event in Sandton can also consider public transport because the published event layout places the Pride Village within the Sandton Central precinct near Gautrain and other transport connections.
