South Africa Weather Today – Tuesday, 19 May 2026

Johannesburg will experience overcast conditions on Tuesday with temperatures ranging between 11°C and 18°C as cloud cover dominates much of the interior. The national weather pattern is characterised by widespread cloud across the central provinces, light rain along the Eastern Cape coast, and relatively mild mid-autumn temperatures averaging 17°C nationwide. The Western and Northern Cape regions are recording the day’s warmest conditions, while the Free State registers the coldest morning minimum at 9°C.

What This Means for Your Day

Cloud cover will reduce sunshine across Gauteng, the Free State, and parts of KwaZulu-Natal, keeping daytime temperatures moderate. Residents in Gqeberha and surrounding Eastern Cape coastal areas should prepare for wet conditions with light rain expected throughout the day. Those in the interior provinces can leave umbrellas at home but may need an extra layer during the morning as temperatures hover in the low teens. Outdoor plans in Limpopo and Mpumalanga are least likely to be affected by weather disruptions.

    South Africa Weather Highlights

    • Mpumalanga records the highest temperature at 24°C in Mbombela
    • Eastern Cape experiences the only rainfall with light rain in Gqeberha
    • Free State sees the coldest morning at 9°C in Bloemfontein
    • Strong winds up to 28 km/h reported along the Eastern Cape coast
    • National average temperature sits at 17°C

    Gauteng

Johannesburg will remain under overcast skies with temperatures between 11°C and 18°C. The cloud cover persists throughout the day with northerly winds at 6 km/h. Humidity levels sit at 53%, creating comfortable conditions despite limited sunshine. Pretoria can expect similar overcast patterns with moderate temperatures suitable for most outdoor activities that don’t require direct sunlight.

    Western Cape

Cape Town will see broken clouds with temperatures ranging from 17°C to 21°C. South-easterly winds at 11 km/h will provide a mild breeze along the coast. Humidity reaches 77%, typical for this time of year. The cloud cover offers relief from strong autumn sun, making it suitable weather for both indoor and outdoor plans across the metro and surrounding winelands.

    KwaZulu-Natal

Durban experiences broken clouds with temperatures between 18°C and 22°C. Southerly winds at 10 km/h accompany humidity levels of 69%. The coastal city will see intermittent cloud cover throughout the day. Inland areas including Pietermaritzburg can expect similar cloudy conditions with slightly cooler temperatures in the midlands region.

    Eastern Cape

Gqeberha is the only major centre recording active rainfall today, with light rain and temperatures steady at 18°C. Strong easterly winds at 28 km/h will affect coastal areas, and humidity sits at 86%. Residents should expect wet roads and reduced visibility at times. This rainfall system remains localised to the coastal belt, with the interior parts of the province staying drier under cloudy skies.

    Limpopo

Polokwane enjoys clear skies with temperatures between 13°C and 19°C. North-easterly winds at 6 km/h create calm conditions across the province. With humidity at 59% and full sunshine expected, Limpopo offers the best weather in the country today. The Lowveld and Waterberg regions will similarly benefit from uninterrupted sunshine and mild temperatures.

    Mpumalanga

Mbombela records the day’s highest temperature at 24°C, with a morning low of 14°C under scattered clouds. East-south-easterly winds at 5 km/h and 60% humidity create pleasant conditions. The province’s subtropical climate delivers warm, partly cloudy weather ideal for outdoor work and leisure. The Highveld escarpment areas will be slightly cooler but equally comfortable.

    North West

Mahikeng sees scattered clouds with temperatures ranging from 13°C to 19°C. North-north-easterly winds are notably stronger at 18 km/h. Humidity levels of 58% combine with the cloud cover to produce moderate conditions across the province. Rustenburg and surrounding areas will experience similar partly cloudy weather with breezy spells during the afternoon.

    Free State

Bloemfontein records broken clouds and a temperature range of 9°C to 19°C, marking the coldest morning minimum nationally. North-easterly winds at 18 km/h will be noticeable throughout the day. Humidity sits at 49%. Residents should dress warmly during early morning hours, though conditions will improve significantly by midday as temperatures climb into the high teens.

    Northern Cape

Kimberley experiences scattered clouds with temperatures between 12°C and 21°C. North-north-easterly winds at 18 km/h contribute to breezy conditions. Humidity levels of 52% remain comfortable. The province’s semi-arid interior will see partial sunshine breaking through cloud cover during the afternoon. Upington and the western reaches of the province can expect warmer, clearer conditions.

    Weekend Outlook

The week ahead shows gradual clearing across the interior provinces. Wednesday brings similar cloudy conditions to Johannesburg with temperatures between 11°C and 18°C. By Friday, temperatures dip slightly to 10°C to 17°C before the weekend ushers in clearer skies. Saturday looks particularly favourable with clear conditions and temperatures returning to 11°C to 18°C in Gauteng, providing the best weekend weather for outdoor plans. Sunday maintains this improved pattern across most of the country.

    Weather Tips for Today

    • Carry a light waterproof jacket if travelling through the Eastern Cape coastal region
    • Dress in layers across the Free State and Gauteng to manage the 10-degree temperature variation between morning and afternoon
    • Secure outdoor items in Gqeberha and surrounding areas due to strong coastal winds reaching 28 km/h
    • Plan outdoor activities in Limpopo and Mpumalanga where clear to partly cloudy skies dominate
    • Morning commuters in Bloemfontein should prepare for near-freezing conditions at 9°C
