Millions of South African social grant beneficiaries are being urged to replace their SASSA Gold Cards before 31 August 2026 or risk losing access to their SASSA grant payments. Postbank has confirmed that the deadline will not be extended and that the older cards will stop working after that date.

The warning affects pensioners, people living with disabilities, child support grant recipients and other social grant beneficiaries who still rely on SASSA Gold Cards to receive monthly payments. For Gauteng residents who depend on grants to cover food, transport and household expenses, missing the deadline could result in payment disruptions and difficulties accessing funds.

With only a few payment cycles remaining before the change takes effect, Postbank is encouraging beneficiaries to switch to the new Postbank Black Card as soon as possible.

SASSA Gold Cards Will Stop Working After 31 August 2026

Postbank has confirmed that all SASSA Gold Cards will become invalid after 31 August 2026.

Once the deadline passes, beneficiaries who have not migrated to the new Postbank Black Card may be unable to access their grant payments through the old card system.

The bank has stressed that beneficiaries should not assume another deadline extension will be granted.

Who Needs to Replace Their SASSA Gold Card?

The deadline applies to any social grant beneficiary who still uses a SASSA Gold Card.

    This includes recipients of:

    • Older Persons Grants
    • Disability Grants
    • Child Support Grants
    • Foster Child Grants
    • Care Dependency Grants
    • Other social assistance payments

Beneficiaries who already use a Postbank Black Card are not affected.

Why Is Postbank Replacing the Gold Cards?

The migration forms part of Postbank’s nationwide card replacement programme.

According to the bank, the Black Cards offer:

    • Improved security features
    • Better protection against fraud
    • Enhanced protection against unauthorised deductions
    • A more modern grant payment system

The cards are valid for four years and can be used at ATMs, retailers and payment points nationwide.

What Happens If You Do Not Switch Before the Deadline?

This is the question worrying many beneficiaries.

According to Postbank, beneficiaries who fail to replace their Gold Cards before 31 August may be unable to:

    • Withdraw grant money at ATMs
    • Make purchases using grant funds
    • Check account balances
    • Print account statements
    • Access grant payments through the old card system

Postbank Chief Commercial Officer Thami Cele has warned that beneficiaries who miss the deadline will first need to obtain a Black Card before they can access payments.

Could Your SASSA Grant Payment Be Interrupted?

While grants themselves will not be cancelled, access to grant funds could become more difficult if beneficiaries continue using expired Gold Cards after the deadline.

This means some recipients could experience delays in accessing money intended for:

    • Groceries
    • Public transport
    • Electricity purchases
    • School-related expenses
    • Household necessities

The risk is particularly significant for vulnerable beneficiaries who depend entirely on monthly grant payments.

How Many Beneficiaries Still Need to Switch?

Government figures released earlier in the migration process suggested approximately 1.3 million beneficiaries had not yet moved to the new card system.

Although migration numbers have improved since then, Postbank has continued warning that hundreds of thousands of beneficiaries may still need to replace their cards before August.

Many of these beneficiaries are believed to be elderly residents and people living in rural or underserved communities.

Step by Step: How to Replace Your SASSA Gold Card

Step 1: Find a Card Replacement Site

Visit a participating replacement site located inside selected retail stores.

Step 2: Bring the Required Documents

    Beneficiaries need:

    • A valid South African ID book
    • A Smart ID card
    • Or a temporary ID document

Step 3: Collect Your Postbank Black Card

The replacement card is issued free of charge.

Step 4: Activate Your New Card

Follow the instructions provided by Postbank staff.

Step 5: Use Your Card for Future Grant Payments

Once activated, the card can be used for grant payments, ATM withdrawals and purchases at participating retailers.

Where Can Gauteng Beneficiaries Replace Their Cards?

Postbank says Black Cards can be collected at designated sites inside:

    • Shoprite
    • Checkers
    • Boxer
    • Usave
    • Pick n Pay
    • Spar

Beneficiaries do not need to complete any forms to receive the new card.

What Beneficiaries Should Do Before August

With only a limited number of payment cycles remaining, beneficiaries may benefit from replacing their cards sooner rather than later.

    Switching early may help:

    • Avoid long queues
    • Reduce transport costs
    • Prevent last-minute panic
    • Resolve identification issues before the deadline
    • Avoid overcrowded replacement centres

Postbank has repeatedly urged beneficiaries not to delay the process.

Long Queues and Other Challenges Facing Beneficiaries

The migration process has faced criticism from lawmakers and civil society organisations.

    Concerns raised include:

    • Long queues at collection sites
    • Limited replacement centres
    • Transport costs
    • Accessibility challenges for elderly beneficiaries
    • Difficulties faced by people living with disabilities

Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Social Development previously called for additional support measures to assist vulnerable grant recipients.

How to Protect Yourself From SASSA and Postbank Scams

Postbank has warned beneficiaries to remain alert to scams during the migration process.

    The bank says:

    • Replacement cards are free
    • No application forms are required
    • Beneficiaries should never share their PINs
    • Only official Postbank Black Cards are legitimate

Any card not clearly marked “Postbank” should be treated with caution.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

Gauteng is home to millions of social grant beneficiaries who rely on monthly payments to meet essential living costs.

For these residents, the approaching deadline means there is limited time remaining to switch to the new payment system.

As August draws closer, replacement sites across Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and the Vaal could experience increased demand, longer queues and higher volumes of beneficiaries seeking assistance.

Residents who still use SASSA Gold Cards may therefore face greater challenges if they wait until the final weeks before the deadline.

Frequently Asked Questions About the SASSA Gold Card Deadline

Will my SASSA Gold Card still work after 31 August 2026?

No. Postbank says all SASSA Gold Cards will stop functioning after 31 August 2026.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

You may be unable to access your grant payments until you obtain a Postbank Black Card.

Can I still receive my grant without a Postbank Black Card?

The grant itself is not cancelled, but accessing the money may become difficult if you continue using an expired Gold Card.

How much does it cost to replace my card?

The replacement card is issued free of charge.

    What documents do I need?

You need a valid South African ID book, Smart ID card or temporary ID document.

Will Postbank extend the deadline again?

Postbank has stated that the 31 August 2026 deadline will not be extended.

    What Happens Next?

With only a few payment cycles remaining before the deadline, Postbank is expected to continue encouraging beneficiaries to migrate to the new card system. The bank has maintained that the deadline remains fixed, meaning grant recipients who still use SASSA Gold Cards have a limited window to switch before the old cards become invalid.
