Thousands of social grant beneficiaries across Gauteng have until 31 August 2026 to replace their SASSA Gold Cards or risk losing access to their payments. Postbank has confirmed that the final phase of the migration to new Postbank Black Cards will begin on 29 April 2026, with no extensions expected beyond the deadline. The change directly affects grant recipients who still rely on Gold Cards for monthly payments, particularly in high population areas such as Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni, where demand for collection points is expected to increase.

The transition forms part of a broader national programme to modernise the social grant payment system and improve security for beneficiaries.

Postbank Sets Firm Deadline for Card Migration

Postbank has confirmed that all SASSA Gold Cards will stop working after 31 August 2026.

According to the bank, the migration process has been ongoing since September 2024, but the upcoming phase represents the final push to move all remaining beneficiaries onto the new system.

Postbank Chief Commercial Officer Thamsanqa Cele said the deadline is final and urged recipients to act immediately.

    • Migration start of final phase: 29 April 2026
    • Deadline to switch: 31 August 2026
    • Affected group: Beneficiaries still using Gold Cards
    • Consequence of missing deadline: Possible payment disruption

“The deadline will not be extended,” Cele said, warning that delays could result in interrupted grant payments.

Gauteng Expected To See High Demand at Collection Points

With Gauteng accounting for a large share of South Africa’s population, the province is likely to experience significant pressure on Postbank service points.

Beneficiaries can collect their new Postbank Black Cards at participating retailers, including:

    • Shoprite
    • Checkers
    • Usave
    • Pick n Pay
    • Boxer
    • Spar

Postbank said beneficiaries can collect their cards at any location nationwide, regardless of where their grant was originally registered.

In Gauteng, this flexibility may help reduce congestion, although demand is still expected to be high in major urban centres.

What Changes With The New Postbank Black Card

The new cards are designed to replace Gold Cards and introduce additional features aimed at improving access and security.

    According to Postbank, benefits include:

    • Three free withdrawals per month
    • One free card replacement
    • A free monthly statement
    • Protection against unauthorised deductions
    • Improved safeguarding of personal information

The bank said accounts linked to the new cards will offer stronger protection compared to the previous system.

    How The Migration Process Works

Postbank has stated that the migration process is free and does not require complex documentation.

    To switch, beneficiaries must:

    • Visit a designated retailer collection point
    • Present a valid South African ID or temporary ID
    • Collect and activate the card immediately

No paperwork is required, and beneficiaries do not need to visit SASSA offices.

Postbank confirmed that any remaining balance on an existing Gold Card will automatically transfer to the new card.

    Fraud Warning Issued to Beneficiaries

As the migration process intensifies, Postbank has warned beneficiaries to be cautious of fraudulent activity.

    The bank advised that:

    • Only cards branded “Postbank” are legitimate
    • No forms are required to activate a card
    • Any requests for payment or additional documents should be treated with suspicion

Beneficiaries are encouraged to use official channels to locate collection points and verify information.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

For Gauteng residents who rely on social grants, the migration deadline has immediate practical implications.

    • High population density means longer queues and increased demand at collection points
    • Delaying the switch may result in payment disruptions after August 2026
    • The availability of multiple retail locations provides alternative access points across the province

Given Gauteng’s scale and reliance on public services, early migration may reduce pressure on the system closer to the deadline.

    What Happens Next

The rollout of the final migration phase will begin at the end of April, with Postbank expected to increase communication and outreach efforts across provinces, including Gauteng.

As the August deadline approaches, pressure on collection points is likely to intensify, particularly in urban areas with large beneficiary populations.

The effectiveness of the rollout will depend on how quickly remaining beneficiaries complete the transition and whether the system can manage demand without disrupting grant access.
