The Incident
Augusto, a 20-year-old university student, alleges that after she changed lanes to avoid a sudden stop by a taxi, Sampear reacted aggressively. She claims he tailgated her, swerved into her lane, and clipped her car. When both drivers exited their vehicles, the situation intensified. Augusto recorded the encounter, during which she says Sampear shouted at her, grabbed her arm, and assaulted her. She admitted to making a rude gesture. However, she insists Sampear’s reaction was disproportionate after the road rage scandal intensified.
Sampear, however, denies any physical assault, despite the road rage scandal. He acknowledges the collision and admits to a heated exchange. Nonetheless, he insists the video was edited to misrepresent the events. According to him, he approached his car only to retrieve his phone and driver’s licence. He did this to exchange details with Augusto, which they did before he left the scene. He expressed horror at the edited footage circulating online. Additionally, he said his legal team would address the matter factually.
Following the incident, Augusto laid assault charges against Sampear at Linden Police Station. Gauteng police confirmed an ongoing investigation into the common assault case, reviewing video evidence and witness statements. No arrest has been made yet amid the ongoing road rage scandal, and the investigation’s outcome remains pending.

The Apology
In response to the public outcry and viral video, Newzroom Afrika placed Sampear on an indefinite leave of absence on 22 April 2025. The broadcaster stated it was taking the allegations seriously and conducting an internal review. They aimed to address concerns raised by the scandal involving road rage.
After nearly a month away from the airwaves, Sampear returned to Newzroom Afrika on 19 May 2025. On live television, he issued an apology amidst the ongoing road rage scandal. He acknowledged his actions, admitted he should have been more composed and worked to de-escalate the situation. While maintaining he did not assault the other driver, he expressed sincere regret. He stated that he fell short of his own standards and the expectations of viewers, colleagues, and management.
Even though Sampear’s apology was both personal and public, the road rage scandal still loomed overhead. He addressed viewers directly, including younger audiences, saying, “To the babies out there, Uncle Aldrin is very, very sorry.” He expressed hope for forgiveness and committed to rebuilding trust through better behavior moving forward. However, he has not issued a direct apology to the victim. The victim, Laricia Augusto, continues to await a full and formal apology from the broadcaster and a resolution to the legal case.
