Maximize Productivity During A Power Outage: Smart Hacks for Load Shedding

A Power outage can happen unexpectedly, either as a result of weather, machinery breakdown, or simply because of animals messing with power cables. In an electricity-reliant world for virtually every aspect of life, load shedding and power cuts can bring domestic and working life to a grinding halt. But when the light goes off, it is not necessarily the case that productivity has to die with it. Instead, with a little foresight and some smart tricks, you can continue working and living efficiently even during a power outage. Here is how you can maximize the downtime and be ready to charge forward whenever the lights go out.

    What Causes a Power Outage?

Power outages are caused by many reasons, and some are more common than others. Severe weather conditions, such as thunderstorms, high winds, and freezing rain, are one of the primary causes. Lightning strikes are the cause of temporary outages, which are automatically corrected by de-energizing the faulty circuits. Not every disruption is man’s work; however, sometimes it is animal work, such as birds roosting in substations or squirrels gnawing at transmission lines. Additionally, tree branches breaking onto wires, equipment malfunction, or human errors such as automobile accidents can all lead to power outages.

How to Prepare for a Power Outage

Though we cannot know when the power will fail, preparation is the path to safety or hysteria. You don’t need to scramble around for candles and batteries every time the power fails, prepare an outage kit ahead of time. This is what you should put in it:

A note with contact numbers, including the area electricity utility

    Duct tape and aluminum foil

    Batteries (AAA, AA, and D)

Candles (tea lights, votives, or jar candles)

LED flashlights (look for battery-powered or crank-powered models)

Battery-powered weather radio with USB charging

    Power banks and charging cords

One gallon of water per person per day

    Emergency chemical hand warmers

    Non-perishable food

Preparing these things in advance makes you ready to ride out a power outage for a few hours or even a few days.

Boost Productivity When the Power Goes Down

    1. Light It Up Creatively

When there is a power outage, it can be difficult to continue work or household tasks, particularly if you’re in a larger area. Flashlights or candles won’t provide as much illumination. Here’s a sneaky trick that will make your lights better: make a homemade lantern. Fill a milk bottle with water, tape an LED flashlight or headlamp to the top, and the water will curve the light so that it radiates more. Stand the jug in front of a mirror for an even brighter light. This trick is as bright as a 55-watt bulb and is great for lighting your house or workspace.

    1. Keep Your Perishables Safe

Freshness of food is a problem when the electricity is out. For brief interruptions, do not open the refrigerator door frequently. A general rule of thumb is that food will remain cold for approximately 4 hours in a well-packed refrigerator. If you expect prolonged power outages, store perishables in coolers with ice packs. Keep a small portable cooler in reserve.

    1. Stay Connected

Remaining connected to the rest of the world when there is a blackout is important in order to stay productive and safe. Charge all your devices prior to a blackout and power banks as well. If you possess internet devices, keep them plugged into the power banks so that you stay online even during a prolonged blackout. Battery or hand-crank weather radios are also convenient, allowing you to stay updated on the duration of the blackout and any emergency notices.

    1. Keep Warm

If you reside in a cold region and a power cut might leave you in the hands of the cold, plan ahead with blankets, warm clothing, or a camping heater. Fans that operate on batteries will also help circulate the air if it gets too hot indoors. If your region is subject to prolonged cuts, invest in a solar heater for future planning.

Fun and Useful Tips During Load Shedding

Though outages can be inconvenient, they also offer an opportunity to experiment with some innovative alternatives for family fun or accomplishing work. The following are some ideas for staying productive:

    1. Cook Ahead of Time

If you are aware that you will be going through load shedding while having dinner, plan in advance and prepare early. Prepare double the amount of food while electricity is available and keep it for reheating. You can also use no-cook foods like salads, sandwiches, and wraps during load shedding.

    1. Have a Dinner Under the Stars

Make load shedding a family activity with an outdoor braai. This is just as good an excuse as any to spend time with loved ones and friends while braaiing outside. It not only guarantees that meal preparation is still enjoyable, but it also turns the inconvenience into an experience of togetherness.

    1. Enjoy Board Games

Load shedding is a perfect opportunity for old-fashioned entertainment. Dig out your set of board games, cards, or puzzles and transform the standby into family game night. With the average blackout lasting from 90 minutes to 4 hours, there is enough time for a game of Monopoly or Scrabble.

    1. Download Movies to Watch Offline

If binge-watching is your thing, load shedding can be the perfect excuse to finally watch your shows. Most streaming platforms enable you to download movies and TV shows to watch offline. Download your items of interest before bed, and enjoy uninterrupted entertainment on your smartphone or tablet.

Alternative Power Solutions for Long-Term Benefits

For those who wish to put an end to load shedding blues once and for all, alternative power solutions are a tempting option. Solar panels, backup generators, and even solar geysers can keep the lights on in case of a blackout. Not only will these systems provide relief immediately, but they can also help cut down your long-term electricity bills.

While it may cost money to start, solar systems and off-grid systems will pay themselves back multiple times in the savings they provide. They also increase the value of your home, making them yet another attraction for consumers in a more environmentally oriented market.

    Stay Informed

There also exist numerous apps nowadays with which you can monitor load shedding timetables and get instant notifications ahead of outages beginning. With an app on your phone, you can organize your day better and minimize any nasty surprises during power outages. The apps can easily help you to monitor the load shedding cycles in your locality and keep you ready.

Make Load Shedding Work for You

Load shedding does not have to be a work killer. With proper preparations and a little creative thinking, you can keep going full blast at home or in the office. By purchasing emergency kits, learning substitutions for lighting and cooking, and remaining informed about planned outages, you can keep the wheels rolling, loss of power aside.

Take Charge of Your Energy Future

For everyone who wants to end load shedding, now is the ideal time to sharpen your mind on solar solutions, battery backup, and other clean technology. Investing in them now means you’ll be ready for tomorrow’s emergency and keep the lights on when you need them most.
