Why Are the Power Outages Happening?

City Power has explained that these interruptions are necessary to conduct essential maintenance work on substations, cables, and switching stations. Regular upkeep helps prevent unplanned outages and ensures a more stable power supply in the long term.

Areas Affected by August Power Interruptions

The most significant outages next week include parts of Johannesburg’s Central Business District (CBD) and Doornfontein. On Monday, 18 August 2025, the Van Beek Substation area will experience an 8-hour blackout from 10:00 to 18:00. Affected areas include:

    • Doornfontein and New Doornfontein
    • Streets in the CBD such as Plein, Lillian Ngoyi, Rissik, Joubert, Elloff, Rahima Moosa, and Rockey

    Other suburbs facing outages include:

    • Randview Avenue in Ferndale (Wednesday, 20 August, 09:00–17:00)
    • Malanshof and Strydom Park (Wednesday, 20 August, 09:00–17:00)

    Previous Outages Earlier This Month

On Tuesday, 12 August 2025, an 8-hour planned outage affected areas served by the Olivedale Substation from 08:00 to 14:00. Key locations impacted included the Santa area, SAPS Public Order, PUTCO Bus Depot, Military Base, Diepkloof Mortuary, and Wits Medical Centre.

Repairs in Oakland have faced delays due to underground cable complexities, affecting power restoration timelines.

    What Residents Should Know

City Power advises all customers to treat all electrical supply points as live during outages, as supply can be restored without warning. The utility regrets any inconvenience caused but stresses that maintenance is essential for maintaining and improving power reliability.

How to Prepare for the Outages

Residents and businesses in the affected areas should:

    • Charge essential devices and backup power sources in advance
    • Plan for lighting and refrigeration needs during the outage
    • Avoid using elevators during outage hours
    • Unplug sensitive electrical appliances to prevent damage from power surges

City Power’s Commitment to Service Improvement

These carefully planned outages form part of City Power’s ongoing programme to enhance electrical infrastructure and reduce unplanned outages across Johannesburg. Improved maintenance and upgrades support a more reliable power supply for thousands of residents and businesses.

    Stay Prepared
