South African social media influencer, Cyan Boujee (Honour Zuma) has come under fire after promoting a controversial job recruitment programme in Russia. The programme, advertised as a “fresh new start” for young women, has been widely criticised as a scam, prompting Cyan Boujee to issue a public apology.

Influencer Promotes Controversial Russian Job Scheme

In July 2025, Cyan Boujee shared a video promoting the Alabuga Start programme in Tatarstan, Russia. The video showcased accommodation and training opportunities for young women aged 18 to 22, enticing many job seekers facing high unemployment in South Africa.

She described the programme as a chance to learn new skills, receive professional training, and be treated fairly alongside other international participants. The influencer’s TikTok account, followed by 1.7 million users, spread the recruitment message widely.

Government and Public Concern Over Legitimacy

South African authorities expressed concern, after social media users flagged the legitimacy of the programme. The Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities warned young women to tread carefully with unverified international job offers, especially those shared via social media.

Clayson Monyela, head of public diplomacy, communicated that legitimate overseas employment is arranged through formal diplomatic channels, not social media campaigns.

Allegations of Human Trafficking and Labour Violations

Reports surfaced linking the Alabuga Start programme to recruitment of African women into factories producing drones used in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Investigations by international bodies including Interpol are underway.

Many recruited women report being misled about the nature of work and conditions. Some faced labour rights abuses, surveillance, restricted movement, and lower wages than promised.

    Cyan Boujee’s Response and Apology

Following the backlash, Cyan Boujee removed her promotional video and issued a public apology. She acknowledged the outrage and expressed regret for her involvement, clarifying she had no intention to deceive anyone.

Cyan Boujee urged her followers to seek verified information and promised to be more cautious about promotions going forward.

    Role and Responsibility of Influencers

The controversy sparked wider discussions about influencer accountability. Social media stars with large followings have significant influence, especially among vulnerable youth.

Critics stress the need for influencers to vet opportunities thoroughly and promote only verified, ethical programmes to protect their audiences.

Other Influencers Speak Out on the Controversy

In response to the backlash, several South African influencers have stepped up to address concerns regarding the Russian job scam campaign. One notable social media personality, known on TikTok as Siyamthanda Anita (_peachysprinkles), posted a video urging young people to be cautious and informed about overseas job offers. She emphasised the importance of verifying the legitimacy of opportunities before promoting or engaging with them. This reflects growing awareness among South African influencers about their responsibility to protect their audiences, especially vulnerable youth, from potentially exploitative schemes.

    Impact on South African Youth

The scam has highlighted the vulnerability of South African youth to online recruitment fraud amid soaring unemployment rates. Many young people are desperate for work and may fall prey to such schemes promising overseas employment.

Awareness campaigns now emphasise verifying offers and reporting suspicious job adverts on social media.

Opportunity for Government to Educate Youth

This controversy should serve as a wake-up call for the South African government to take greater responsibility in educating young people about safely navigating international job or academic opportunities. Authorities should strengthen school curricula with practical topics, especially in subjects like Life Orientation.

    Government and International Actions

South African government agencies and international law enforcement continue investigations into the Alabuga Start programme and other similar scams.

    Public Advised to Exercise Caution

Authorities urge the public, especially young job seekers, to verify all foreign job offers through official government channels. If promises sound too good to be true, they probably are.

Youth are advised to report suspicious adverts and avoid sharing unverified opportunities online.

Accountability: Influencers and the Bigger Picture

While influencers like Cyan Boujee and others were wrong to accept and promote the Alabuga Start Programme without full verification, they represent only the visible tip of a much larger problem. The primary focus must shift to identifying and holding accountable those behind the campaign. Inquiries have revealed the scheme orchestrators deliberately targeted vulnerable youth with deceptive offers, masking forced labour under the guise of career opportunities.

    YouTube

Authorities and international bodies should work to dismantle the network responsible for this exploitative programme. Legal consequences and stricter regulations are necessary to prevent future abuses and protect young South Africans from similar scams. The public should remain vigilant and support efforts to expose the full scope of this disturbing operation.

    Building Safer Employment Pathways

This incident underscores the need for safer pathways to employment both locally and internationally. Strengthening government job placement programmes and educating youth about risks are critical steps.

Influencers and stakeholders must collaborate to foster responsible messaging and safeguard young people from exploitation.
