The Gauteng Load Reduction Schedule for the week of 25 to 31 May 2026 has been confirmed by Eskom. As winter demand on the national grid climbs, load reduction is being applied during morning and evening peak hours to protect overloaded transformers across high-density areas in Soweto, Ekurhuleni, Tshwane, Sedibeng and the West Rand.

This is separate from national load shedding, it is a targeted, localised intervention focused on residential networks that exceed their design capacity during peak demand.

How to Prepare for Load Reduction in Gauteng

A four-hour morning cut and a five-hour evening cut leaves residents with a manageable but real disruption to plan around:

    • Charge essentials early — phones, laptops, power banks and medical devices, before 05h00 and again before 17h00.
    • Cook ahead — use the midday window to prepare meals; flask-store coffee, tea and hot water for the evening.
    • Unplug sensitive electronics — fridges, TVs, decoders, Wi-Fi routers. Switch back on gradually when power returns to avoid surge damage.
    • Check backup batteries — gate motors, alarms and electric fences need to be holding charge.
    • Plan travel — traffic lights will be off in affected suburbs during the morning peak. Treat dark intersections as four-way stops.
    • Store water — areas reliant on electric pumps may experience pressure drops during the cut.
