South Africa’s unemployment rate increased to 32.7% during the first quarter of 2026, with Gauteng among the provinces hardest hit by job losses. New data released by Statistics South Africa shows that 345 000 jobs were lost nationally between January and March, while youth unemployment climbed sharply as 258 000 young people lost work.

The latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey released on Tuesday reveals growing pressure on the country’s labour market despite modest improvements recorded during the second half of 2025. Gauteng alone lost 67 000 jobs during the quarter, making it one of the provinces most affected by employment declines.

The figures are expected to intensify concerns around youth employment, economic growth and the cost-of-living pressures affecting households across the province.

South Africa’s Unemployment Rate Climbs Again

According to Statistics South Africa, the official unemployment rate increased by 1.3 percentage points from 31.4% in the fourth quarter of 2025 to 32.7% in the first quarter of 2026.

The agency said the increase followed widespread job losses across several sectors of the economy.

    Stats SA reported that:

    • 345 000 people lost jobs nationally
    • Employment declined to 16.8 million people
    • 301 000 more people became unemployed
    • Total unemployment rose to 8.1 million people

The statistics agency said the labour force decreased by 44 000 during the same period.

Economists say the latest figures reflect ongoing pressure on businesses, slow economic growth and weak labour market recovery.

    Youth Employment Crisis Deepens

One of the biggest concerns in the report is the continued rise in youth unemployment.

According to Stats SA, the number of unemployed young people between the ages of 15 and 34 increased by 181 000 during the quarter, bringing the total number of unemployed youth to 4.7 million.

    The report also found that:

    • 258 000 employed youth lost their jobs
    • Total employed youth declined to 5.6 million
    • Youth unemployment increased to 45.8%

This means nearly half of young South Africans actively looking for work remain unemployed.

Labour analysts say youth unemployment continues affecting economic mobility, household income and long-term social stability across the country.

    Gauteng Among Provinces Hardest Hit

The latest labour data shows Gauteng recorded significant employment losses during the quarter.

According to Stats SA, Gauteng lost approximately 67 000 jobs between January and March 2026.

Only North West recorded larger job losses during the same period.

    Other provinces affected included:

    • Mpumalanga: 54 000 jobs lost
    • Eastern Cape: 43 000 jobs lost
    • Limpopo: 43 000 jobs lost

KwaZulu-Natal was the only province to record an increase in employment, adding approximately 6 000 jobs.

Gauteng’s losses are particularly significant because the province remains South Africa’s economic and employment hub.

Which Industries Lost the Most Jobs?

Stats SA identified several industries that experienced major employment declines during the quarter.

The biggest job losses were recorded in:

    • Community and social services: 206 000 jobs lost
    • Construction: 110 000 jobs lost
    • Transport: 30 000 jobs lost

The agency suggested that retrenchments and company closures may have contributed to the declines, although specific causes were not detailed.

Meanwhile, a smaller number of sectors recorded gains:

    • Manufacturing added 38 000 jobs
    • Mining added 32 000 jobs
    • Agriculture added 10 000 jobs

Economists say weak infrastructure investment, rising operational costs and slower economic activity continue affecting labour-intensive industries such as construction and transport.

More South Africans Giving Up on Job Searches

The report also revealed growing discouragement among job seekers.

Stats SA said discouraged work-seekers increased by 178 000 to reach 3.9 million people nationally.

Discouraged work-seekers are people who want employment but have stopped actively searching because they believe no jobs are available.

The number of people classified as part of the “potential labour force” increased by 240 000 to 4.9 million.

Analysts say this trend reflects declining confidence in the labour market and ongoing economic uncertainty.

Formal and Informal Sectors Both Affected

The latest labour data shows employment losses affected both formal and informal sectors.

    Stats SA reported that:

    • 189 000 formal sector jobs were lost
    • 127 000 informal sector jobs disappeared

The figures suggest economic pressure is affecting businesses across multiple parts of the economy, including smaller enterprises and informal traders.

Small business groups say rising electricity costs, weak consumer spending and operational pressures continue affecting business sustainability.

    Gauteng’s Economic Pressure Continues Growing

The rise in unemployment comes amid broader economic challenges facing Gauteng residents.

Households across the province continue dealing with:

    • Rising food costs
    • Electricity price increases
    • Transport expenses
    • High debt levels
    • Slow hiring activity

Youth unemployment remains particularly visible in urban areas where many young people continue searching for work opportunities within retail, hospitality, logistics, construction and services sectors.

Economists warn that prolonged unemployment can also increase pressure on households already supporting extended family members.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

For Gauteng residents, rising unemployment may have direct implications for household income, spending and economic stability.

The loss of 67 000 jobs in the province could place additional pressure on:

    • Household finances
    • Consumer spending
    • Small businesses
    • Youth employment opportunities
    • Local economic activity

Communities with already high unemployment levels may also experience increased pressure as more residents compete for limited employment opportunities.

Industry experts say improving infrastructure investment, supporting small businesses and accelerating economic growth may remain key priorities for addressing unemployment levels.

    What Happens Next

Economists and labour analysts are expected to continue monitoring employment trends as government and businesses attempt to stimulate economic activity during 2026.
