In a significant leap forward for health-care in Gauteng, local clinics and Community Health Centres (CHCs) have been equipped with X-ray machines. This installation dramatically improves diagnostic services for communities. This initiative is part of a broader plan to strengthen primary health-care in the province. It aims to bring essential medical services closer to residents, particularly in townships and informal settlements.

    Improved Access to Diagnostic Services

The rollout of X-ray machines to local clinics has already begun to make a tangible difference in the way health-care is delivered in Gauteng. Historically, many patients from underserved communities had to travel long distances to access diagnostic imaging services. Now, with X-ray machines installed at several CHCs, residents no longer need to make the long journey to larger hospitals for simple diagnostic tests.

This transformation is crucial for early detection, timely treatment, and improved patient outcomes. X-ray machines are critical in diagnosing a wide range of conditions. These include fractures, infections, and lung diseases such as tuberculosis and pneumonia.

Reducing the Burden on Tertiary Hospitals

By providing diagnostic imaging at the primary health-care level, the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is not only improving healthcare access but also easing the burden on larger, tertiary hospitals. As more local clinics gain X-ray capabilities, the number of referrals to high-level facilities will decrease. This shift helps to decongest tertiary hospitals, enabling them to focus on more complex cases. Moreover, it ensures routine diagnostic needs are met at the community level.

    Expanding Coverage Across Gauteng

Currently, a majority of CHCs in Gauteng are equipped with X-ray machines, but the expansion is set to continue. The Gauteng Department of Health has plans to further roll out X-ray services to additional primary health-care facilities. Notable clinics such as Daveyton Clinic, Phola Park, Empilisweni, and Ennerdale CHCs are among those set to receive on-site imaging services. This will further improve health-care delivery in these areas.

    MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko’s Commitment

During the 2025/26 Budget Vote presentation, Gauteng’s MEC for Health and Wellness, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, underscored the importance of strengthening primary health-care in the province. She highlighted the installation of X-ray machines as a vital step in improving diagnostic capabilities and health-care outcomes. During a service delivery oversight visit to Khutsong Main CHC in Carletonville, MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko personally reviewed the ongoing refurbishments and the newly installed X-ray machine.

Despite some facilities awaiting regulatory approval for their equipment, mobile X-ray trucks are being deployed to ensure continued access to diagnostic services for affected communities. These mobile units help bridge the gap while permanent installations are being finalised.

Supporting Community Health with Advanced Technology

X-ray machines play an essential role in diagnosing a variety of conditions, including fractures, infections, tumours, and lung diseases. With these diagnostic tools now readily available at the primary care level, local health-care providers can make more informed decisions. This ensures faster and more accurate care for patients. This availability is especially important for patients with trauma-related injuries, as early imaging can help prevent complications such as improper healing, infections, or permanent disabilities.

During the #GPBudgetVote2025, MEC @NkomoNomantu committed to equipping Community Health Centres in the province with X-ray machines to improve diagnostics.

    Addressing Healthcare Inequities

The installation of X-ray machines directly at local clinics addresses a long-standing issue of health-care inequity in Gauteng. Many communities, especially those in townships, hostels, and informal settlements, have historically had to travel far distances to access basic diagnostic services. By bringing X-ray technology to these areas, the provincial government is improving health-care equity. This makes essential services more accessible to underserved populations.

The Role of Local Communities in Improving Healthcare

The successful rollout of X-ray machines in Gauteng’s clinics highlights the importance of community involvement in improving health-care systems. Residents in the affected areas have been key players in ensuring that diagnostic services are provided swiftly and effectively. The collaboration between local health-care workers, patients, and the government is vital in achieving the objective of equitable and accessible health-care for all.

The installation of X-ray machines is part of a broader effort to strengthen the health-care infrastructure in Gauteng. This ensures that all residents, no matter their location, have access to the quality care they need.

Future Prospects for Primary Healthcare in Gauteng

This move towards more advanced health-care delivery at the primary care level is part of the Gauteng Department of Health’s broader strategy to transform and modernise health-care in the province. Beyond the installation of X-ray machines, the department is also focused on expanding other diagnostic and treatment services at local clinics. This ensures comprehensive care for all residents.

In addition to the medical advancements, the department is committed to continued staff training and the improvement of health-care facilities. This ensures that health-care providers are well-equipped to meet the growing needs of their communities.

    Impact on Patient Outcomes

The availability of X-ray machines in local clinics significantly enhances patient outcomes. Early detection and diagnosis lead to more timely treatment, reducing the risk of complications and improving recovery rates. Additionally, conducting X-rays on-site means that patients can receive their results more quickly. This enables health-care providers to make decisions about treatment plans without delay.

This development is particularly beneficial for vulnerable populations, including children, the elderly, and people with chronic conditions. These groups often face barriers to accessing care in larger hospitals.

Strengthening the Healthcare System in Gauteng

The introduction of X-ray machines at Gauteng’s local clinics is a clear indication of the government’s commitment to improving the health-care system. This initiative will not only make health-care more accessible, but it will also contribute to the long-term sustainability of the province’s health-care services. By focusing on strengthening primary health-care, the Gauteng Department of Health is ensuring that the system is equipped to handle the evolving needs of its diverse population.
