50-Hour Water Disruption in Johannesburg: These Areas Will Be Affected

Johannesburg residents are set to experience a significant water disruption lasting approximately 50 hours, starting at 5:00 am on 30 June 2025. This interruption is part of a critical maintenance programme by Rand Water, aimed at upgrading and ensuring the long-term reliability of the city’s water supply infrastructure.

What Is Happening and Why?
Rand Water will conduct essential repairs and maintenance on the Zwartkopjes system, a key component of Johannesburg’s bulk water supply network. During this 50-hour period, pumping will be completely halted to enable safe and effective pipe leak repairs at the Zuikerbosch plant. This temporary shutdown is necessary to prevent further damage and to improve the overall efficiency and capacity of the water supply system.
Areas Most Affected by the Disruption
The water supply interruption will impact several Johannesburg Water (JW) systems connected to the Zwartkopjes and Eikenhof systems. Key affected areas include:
- Soweto
- Randburg
- Roodepoort
- Lenasia
- Brixton and Crosby
- Crown Gardens Reservoir
- Eagles Nest Reservoir
- Aeroton Reservoir
Residents in these areas should expect either complete water outages or significantly reduced water pressure throughout the maintenance period.

Duration and Phased Water Supply Reduction
The disruption will begin with a complete cessation of water pumping for the first six hours. After this, pumping capacity will be restored to 50% for the next 42 hours, before increasing to 80% capacity for the remaining 19 days of the broader maintenance programme. Although the 50-hour no-pumping phase is the most acute, water pressure will remain below normal levels for several weeks after.
Broader Maintenance Programme Context
This 50-hour disruption is part of a larger 21-day maintenance schedule running from 30 June to 21 July 2025. The programme involves cleaning sedimentation tanks, repairing leaks, replacing valves, and upgrading infrastructure across multiple water systems serving Johannesburg and surrounding municipalities. These upgrades are critical to support the anticipated increase in water demand from August 2025 and to reduce the frequency of unplanned outages.
What Residents Should Do
Johannesburg Water advises residents to prepare by storing sufficient water before the outage begins. Alternative water supply points will be set up strategically within affected communities to help alleviate the impact. Residents should also expect a recovery period of up to 14 days after maintenance completion before normal water supply resumes fully.
The Bigger Picture: Johannesburg’s Water Challenges
Johannesburg’s water infrastructure faces ongoing challenges, including ageing pipelines, leaks, and increasing demand. Recent reports reveal that the city loses nearly 46% of its water through leaks and infrastructure failures. These maintenance efforts are part of urgent interventions to stabilise the system and improve water security for millions of residents.
Stay Alert
The upcoming 50-hour water disruption in Johannesburg is a necessary step to maintain and upgrade critical water infrastructure. While inconvenient, these repairs will contribute to a more reliable water supply in the long term. Residents in affected areas should plan accordingly and stay informed through official channels about alternative water supply arrangements.
