The Young Designer Award at Hollywoodbets Durban July has once again attracted the spotlight, showcasing the talent and creativity of Mzansi’s top student fashion designers. The competition, presented by Durban Fashion Fair, has revealed its top 10 finalists after a stunning display of originality and craftsmanship by 25 semifinalists from accredited fashion institutions across KwaZulu-Natal.

Held during the prestigious Hollywoodbets Gold Challenge, the judging of the Young Designer Award took place at the Hollywoodbets Greyville Racecourse, where the semifinalists presented their designs inspired by the theme “Marvels of Mzansi.”
This year’s theme celebrates the rich and diverse South African identity, drawing inspiration from the country’s landscapes, cuisine, entertainment, and traditional ceremonies. The students’ unique interpretations of the theme impressed both the judges and the audience alike, reinforcing the country’s position as a global fashion hub.
Finalists Announced for the 2025 Young Designer Award
The 10 finalists who have secured their spots in the competition are Sinekamva Xali, Mpilo Sithole, Nothile Mkhungo, Andile Cele, Neliswa Gcwabaza, Manqoba Mnguni, Buhle Sicwebue, Irene Price, Queenton Mjweni, and Khethokuhle Thango.
These talented students will now prepare to showcase their collections at a glamorous gala evening on 27 June 2025 at the Gateway Theatre of Shopping. The event promises to be a highlight of the fashion calendar, as the finalists will be joined by participants from the Invited Designer Showcase, presented by Dove, and the DFF Rising Stars Collection.
Judges Praise Innovation and Creativity
Judges of the Young Designer Award at Hollywoodbets Durban July, including Vuyisile Ngobese from the Hollywood Foundation and designer Sandile ‘Duke’ Mngadi, were full of praise for the quality of work presented by the students.
