12-Hour Water Outages Scheduled in Johannesburg: Affected Areas Listed

Johannesburg residents are advised of upcoming 12-hour water outages resulting from planned maintenance by Rand Water and Johannesburg Water. These disruptions aim to upgrade ageing infrastructure and ensure a reliable water supply ahead of the higher demand season from August 2025. Residents should store water in advance and prepare for periods of low to no water pressure.

    Water Supply Recovery and Support

Johannesburg Water stresses that normal water pressure will not immediately return upon work completion. The system typically requires up to three days to stabilise. To mitigate the impact:

    • Residents should store sufficient water before outages.
    • Johannesburg Water will deploy water tankers to affected areas to supplement the supply.
    • Updates will be provided on Johannesburg Water’s official social media channels and through ward councillors.

    Importance of Maintenance

These maintenance operations are critical to:

    • Repair leaks in the O2 pipeline, a major artery for Johannesburg’s bulk water distribution.
    • Upgrade aging infrastructure to ensure reliable and efficient water pressure.
    • Prepare the network for increased water demands expected in the upcoming warm season.
    • Reduce future risk of unplanned outages and infrastructure failures.

    Successful Scheduled Maintenance

Rand Water’s maintenance on the O2 pipeline leak repairs began on 15 July 2025 at 05:00 and continued until 18 July 2025 at 08:00, lasting approximately 75 hours. During this period, residents in key areas experienced reduced pumping capacity, sometimes causing poor pressure, intermittent water supply, or complete outages. Although the major maintenance dates were mid-July, residual recovery of normal water supply may take several days after completion.

    🚨Maintenance Update🚨
We are pleased to report that work on the O2 pipeline leak repair was successfully completed in the early hours of this morning, at 2:00, on Friday, 18 July 2025. @City_Ekurhuleni @CityTshwane @JHBWater @MadibengCouncil pic.twitter.com/Rn1icA2G0q

Practical Tips to Prepare for the Water Outage

    • Store Enough Water in Advance: Fill clean containers with sufficient water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and sanitation needs. A good rule of thumb is at least 20 litres per person per day.
    • Use Water Wisely Before and During the Outage: Limit water use to essential activities before the outage and conserve stored water carefully during the period.
    • Fill Your Bathtubs and Buckets: Before water supply stops, fill bathtubs and buckets for flushing toilets and other household uses.
    • Avoid Washing Machines and Dishwashers: Do not run these appliances during outages to prevent damage and water wastage.
    • Keep Water Containers Covered: This prevents contamination and keeps your stored water clean.
    • Stay Informed: Follow Johannesburg Water’s social media channels and local news for updates and tanker deployment schedules.
    • Report Leaks and Illegal Connections: Help reduce unnecessary water loss by reporting faults promptly to Johannesburg Water.
    • Prepare for Possible Low Water Pressure Post-Maintenance: Normal pressure may take up to three days to resume, so continue conserving water after maintenance ends.

Areas Affected & Summary of Impact from 21 July – 30 July 2025

The following table provides an overview of planned maintenance and water supply interruptions affecting various areas in Johannesburg. It includes details about the affected regions, maintenance schedules, the impact on water supply, and the benefits to customers once the maintenance is completed. Additional Maintenance and Meter Replacement

Beyond the main maintenance, Rand Water will conduct meter replacement work starting 28 July 2025 at 18:00 until 29 July 2025 at 06:00. This will cause interruptions in water supply and a likely 12-hour outage in affected streets, particularly around the Cosmo City Reservoir and Waterval areas.

    Ensuring Resilience and Community Cooperation

The scheduled maintenance by Rand Water and Johannesburg Water is a vital step towards sustaining a reliable and efficient water supply for Johannesburg’s future. While the interruptions may cause inconvenience, proper preparation and community cooperation will help minimise the impact. Continued investment in infrastructure upgrades ensures Johannesburg’s water network meets increased demand and mitigates risks of unexpected breakdowns. Residents’ awareness and responsible water use during these outages are crucial in supporting these efforts. Stay prepared, conserve water wisely, and stay updated with official communications to navigate this period successfully.
