In the heart of Ekurhuleni, one nurse is making an indelible mark in the field of voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC). Tebogo Molefe, who has worked in healthcare for over 15 years, not only saves lives through her precise medical procedures but also challenges the deeply rooted gender norms of this male-dominated field. Her story serves as an example of determination, resilience, and professional growth.

Breaking Gender Stereotypes in Male Circumcision

VMMC is a critical public health service, particularly in South Africa, where it plays a key role in HIV prevention. However, it has traditionally been a space dominated by men, with few women undertaking the procedure. Molefe has continuously defied this norm, breaking barriers that women often face in healthcare professions. With over 15 years of experience, she has proven time and again that skill and dedication transcend gender.

A Journey of Dedication and Growth

Tebogo Molefe’s journey began in 2007 when she enrolled at Ann Latsky Nursing College. After qualifying as an Enrolled Nurse in 2009, she returned to further her studies, obtaining her Registered Nursing qualification in 2015. Her commitment to learning didn’t stop there. In 2021, she specialised in Midwifery, ensuring she stayed at the forefront of her field. Molefe’s dedication to self-development continued with courses in PMTCT, NIMART, and VMMC, ensuring she was well-equipped to handle the responsibilities of her current role.

    Challenges Faced and Overcome

As a female nurse working in VMMC, Tebogo Molefe faced challenges from male patients who questioned her competence. Many doubted her ability to perform circumcisions, a procedure traditionally performed by men. Despite these obstacles, Molefe took every opportunity to educate her patients, explaining medical protocols and the ethical guidelines she followed. “It’s not about my gender; it’s about providing the best care for our community,” Molefe says.

The Rewarding Aspects of Her Role

For Tebogo Molefe, the best part of her job is knowing that she’s made a tangible difference in people’s lives. She recalls one particularly rewarding experience when an asthmatic patient accidentally entered her clinic during an attack. She quickly administered oxygen and called an ambulance. The patient later called to thank her for saving his life. These moments, Molefe says, remind her why she chose this path.

Leadership in VMMC at Tsakani Old Clinic

Today, Molefe serves as the VMMC site supervisor at Tsakani Old Clinic. Her leadership has transformed the clinic, pushing it closer to reaching its goals and enhancing the overall quality of care. Her responsibility goes beyond conducting circumcisions; she ensures that the programme runs smoothly and that patients receive top-tier care throughout the entire process.

    The Impact of Tebogo’s Work

Molefe’s work has not only improved the health of individual patients but has also helped to shift perceptions around female healthcare professionals in male-dominated fields. Her leadership, skill, and commitment have earned her the respect of her peers and patients alike.

    Community Support and Family Balance

Despite the demanding nature of her work, Tebogo Molefe remains committed to her family. “I’m a mother first,” she says. Molefe believes in striking a balance between her professional and personal life, ensuring that both her family and patients receive her best. Her work in the community has also earned her gratitude from locals, with many expressing how much they value her expertise and kindness.

Feedback from Programme Manager and Colleagues

Siphesihle Mnyandu, the Programme Manager, has praised Molefe’s leadership, noting the significant improvements at the clinic under her guidance. “Molefe has shown strong accountability, and the clinic is performing better since she took over,” says Mnyandu. Molefe’s impact is a testament to the power of committed healthcare professionals.

    Inspiring Future Generations

Tebogo Molefe’s story is an inspiration to the next generation of nurses, particularly young women who may feel deterred from pursuing careers in male-dominated fields. Through her work, she demonstrates that passion, expertise, and leadership know no gender.

Visit Gauteng Wins Gold at International Tourism Film Festival Africa

      By Nomthandazo Ntisa6 June , 2026

Visit Gauteng has won Gold at the 2026 International Tourism Film Festival Africa (ITFFA), with the province’s destination marketing film receiving top honours in the Tourism Video: Tourism Destination Marketing category. The award was announced during the ITFFA ceremony held in Johannesburg on 5 June 2026. While tourism awards may appear symbolic, industry experts say recognition of this nature plays an important role in destination marketing, tourism growth, investor confidence and economic development. For Gauteng, the achievement comes as the province continues efforts to attract more visitors, increase tourism spending and strengthen its position as one of Africa’s leading tourism destinations.
