Johannesburg has launched its Transport Month 2026 programme, putting traffic signal upgrades, road repairs, Rea Vaya connectivity and commuter safety on the agenda this October. Launched on Thursday, 1 October, the programme is led by the City of Johannesburg Transport Department under the theme “Working Together Through Public Private Partnerships.” The City says the campaign will bring together municipal entities, government, transport operators and other partners to address parts of Johannesburg’s transport network.

Women continue to be underrepresented in South Africa’s taxi industry despite its critical role in the country’s public transport system. Speaking at the South African National Taxi Council Women’s Month Summit, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy said women account for only about 2% of the industry’s workforce and own just 2.8% of operational minibus taxis. She said government and industry reforms aim to increase women’s participation in ownership, leadership and business opportunities within the sector.
As South Africa prepares to observe Transport Month in October, Gauteng Tourism is already placing mobility at the centre of its Spring, Tourism and Heritage Month strategy. According to the Gauteng Tourism Authority, the province wants to make it easier for visitors to travel between attractions, events, heritage sites and communities while supporting local businesses and creating economic opportunities.
