Student Counsellor Vacancy at the Gauteng College of Nursing

The Gauteng Department of Health is seeking applications for the position of Student Counsellor (PND1 / PND2) at the Gauteng College of Nursing. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the welfare and professional development of nursing students through counselling, development programs, and various student support services.

Key Responsibilities
As a Student Counsellor, the successful candidate will be tasked with:
- Developing, planning, and implementing student counselling and development programmes.
- Facilitating study and life skills to improve students’ academic performance.
- Providing psychological support to students facing psycho-social challenges.
- Assisting in the assessment and referral of students to appropriate external stakeholders.
- Advocating for the general welfare and professional development of students.
- Supporting Student Leaders and promoting their overall development.
- Participating in the recruitment and marketing efforts for new nursing students.
- Conducting research related to Nursing Education, policy development, and student support.
- Engaging in continuous professional development (CPD) related to student support services.
- Working effectively in teams and under pressure to meet student needs.
Requirements
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Educational Qualifications: A Senior Certificate (Grade 12) or equivalent qualification.
- Nursing Qualifications: A Diploma/Degree in Nursing or equivalent qualification in Psychiatric Nursing Science, enabling registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC).
- Nursing Education: A Diploma/Degree in Nursing Education registered with SANC.
- Professional Experience:
- For PNDI: A minimum of 4 years’ appropriate nursing experience after registering as a Professional Nurse with SANC.
- For PNDII: A minimum of 10 years’ nursing experience, with at least 4 years of experience in Nursing Education.
- A minimum of 2 years’ psychiatric/counselling work experience in a mental health environment.
- Additional Skills:
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Strong communication, facilitation, presentation, and report-writing skills.
- Computer literacy.
