The National Student Financial Aid Scheme has opened applications for students seeking funding for the 2027 academic year, giving prospective university and TVET college students across Gauteng and South Africa several weeks to submit their applications.

Applications opened on 18 September 2026. The official NSFAS 2027 application portal currently lists 31 October 2026 as the closing date, meaning applicants should take note that this differs from the 18 November date initially reported when the application cycle was launched.

Higher Education and Training Minister Buti Manamela launched the 2027 application cycle in Parktown, Johannesburg, on 18 September. The Department of Higher Education and Training said the application period forms part of preparations for the 2027 academic year.

NSFAS 2027 applications close on 31 October

The official NSFAS website confirms that applications opened on 18 September and will close on 31 October 2026. Applying for NSFAS funding is free.

Prospective students should therefore work according to the 31 October deadline unless NSFAS officially announces a change.

Students can apply online using their myNSFAS profile. Applicants need their South African identity number, cellphone number and email address when creating or accessing their account.

NSFAS advises applicants to complete their personal and household information, provide the necessary consent and upload all supporting documents requested for their circumstances.

How to apply for NSFAS funding for 2027

Students can begin by creating a myNSFAS profile or signing into an existing account.

Once logged in, applicants must select the application option and complete the required information. They should check that their personal details are correct before submitting the application.

According to NSFAS, the basic application process involves:

    • Creating or accessing a myNSFAS profile
    • Completing the application form
    • Providing personal and household information
    • Uploading the supporting documents requested
    • Checking that the information provided is correct
    • Submitting the application
    • Keeping the application reference number
    • Monitoring the application through myNSFAS

Applicants can track their funding status through their myNSFAS accounts after submitting.

    Documents students may need

Supporting documents depend on the circumstances of each applicant and their household.

NSFAS says every applicant must complete the relevant consent requirements so that information can be verified against third party sources. Applicants may also be asked for documents relating to their parents, guardians, spouse, household income or personal circumstances.

Students with disabilities may need to submit a completed disability annexure together with the required medical report. Applicants who are orphans or vulnerable children may also be required to complete the relevant declaration form.

The NSFAS system generates the documents required for an applicant based on the information provided during the application process.

Applicants should pay close attention to document quality. NSFAS warns that documents can be rejected when pages are unclear, information is cut off, signatures are missing or incorrect forms are submitted.

NSFAS introduces changes for the 2027 cycle

The 2027 funding cycle comes as NSFAS continues making changes to its application and administration systems.

During the launch in Johannesburg, Manamela said improvements were being introduced to make funding processes more efficient and improve the accuracy of decisions.

These include stronger verification of student information and efforts to improve the handling of applications and supporting information.

NSFAS already verifies information with government sources during the assessment process. Its application information states that details can be checked with institutions including the Department of Home Affairs, the South African Revenue Service and the South African Social Security Agency.

NSFAS reported on 22 September that it had already received more than 51 000 applications within four days of opening the 2027 application cycle, indicating significant early demand for funding.

Students should apply for admission separately

An NSFAS application and an application to study at a university or TVET college are separate processes.

Students who require financial assistance must still apply directly to the universities or colleges where they want to study.

Receiving or qualifying for NSFAS funding does not automatically secure admission to a particular institution or programme.

Prospective students should therefore monitor both processes and ensure they meet the admission requirements and deadlines set by their chosen institutions.

Missing middle students and loan funding

Government is also continuing its funding pathway for students who fall outside the traditional NSFAS bursary income requirements but may still struggle to finance higher education.

This group is commonly referred to as the missing middle.

Unlike bursary funding, student loans are repayable according to the applicable conditions. Applicants should check which form of NSFAS assistance they qualify for when completing the application process.

NSFAS is a registered credit provider, while its funding system includes both bursary and loan support depending on the applicable eligibility requirements.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

For Gauteng learners completing matric in 2026, as well as other prospective students planning to enter higher education in 2027, the application window is already open.

Students in Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng and the West Rand do not need to wait until they have completed their final examinations before starting the NSFAS application process.

Applicants should also avoid waiting until the closing date, particularly if they still need supporting documents or information from parents and guardians.

Students who submit applications should regularly check their myNSFAS profiles for requests for additional information. NSFAS says applicants who are asked to provide missing documents are given 30 working days to submit them.

What happens after submitting an application?

Submitting an application is only the first stage.

NSFAS assesses the information supplied and verifies relevant details before determining whether an applicant meets its funding requirements.

Students can follow the progress of their applications through myNSFAS. Possible status updates can indicate that verification is underway, that documents are outstanding, that an applicant is funding eligible or that an application was unsuccessful.

Applicants who receive an unsuccessful outcome and qualify to appeal may submit an appeal within the applicable appeal period. NSFAS currently states that eligible applicants have 30 days from receiving their application outcome to appeal.

    FAQs about NSFAS 2027 applications

When did NSFAS 2027 applications open?

Applications opened on 18 September 2026.

When do NSFAS 2027 applications close?

The official NSFAS website currently lists 31 October 2026 as the closing date for 2027 applications.

How do I apply for NSFAS for 2027?

Applicants must create or access their myNSFAS profile, complete the application, provide the required information and supporting documents, and submit the application before the deadline.

Does an NSFAS application guarantee university admission?

No. Applying for funding and applying for admission are separate processes. Students must also apply to their chosen university or TVET college.

Can I track my NSFAS application?

Yes. Applicants can log into their myNSFAS profiles to monitor their application status and check whether additional information or documents are required.

Students urged to submit applications early

With the 2027 application cycle underway, prospective students have until 31 October 2026 under the dates currently published by NSFAS to complete their funding applications.

Students should check their personal information carefully, upload the documents requested through myNSFAS and retain their application reference numbers.

Applying early also gives applicants more time to respond if NSFAS requests additional documents or information before the funding assessment process is completed.
