Nine Yards avoids the sudden, all-at-once launch typical of large commercial projects. Tenant shopfitting began in late 2025, with staggered openings continuing into early 2026. This phased approach allows the precinct to establish itself organically as part of everyday Johannesburg life.

At the heart of the precinct is a 450-metre urban promenade, designed by award-winning landscape artist Patrick Watson. Inspired by Johannesburg’s natural landscapes, the promenade winds through gardens, courtyards, and gathering spaces, creating a textured, immersive journey through the precinct.
Architecture by Matthew Miller of Milarchi reinforces this approach. Restored heritage buildings sit comfortably alongside contemporary interventions that feel modern without overwhelming the surroundings. Landscape-led design guides how people move through the space, ensuring the environment shapes the experience rather than the other way around.
Visitors encounter shaded coffee spots beneath tree canopies, contemporary art integrated into everyday walking routes, and garden pockets that invite pause. The result is an atmosphere that feels elegant but accessible, calm without feeling curated or exclusive.
A Carefully Curated Mix of Independent Tenants
Nine Yards deliberately avoids big-box retail in favour of a curated tenant mix that prioritises quality, creativity, and local relevance. More than 30 tenants will ultimately operate within the precinct, spanning independent restaurants, artisanal food, wellness, fashion, contemporary design, fresh produce, galleries, and creative studios.
Several tenants have already opened, including Artclub and Friends, Essex Interiors, Garden Fresh, Nunu’s, Plato, Something Good Studio, The GardenShop, and Zuney Wagyu Burger Bar. Additional tenants scheduled to open through 2026 include BodyTec, Dopio Zero, Gelato Mania, Houtlander, Kumalo Turpin, Salvation Café, The Well, True Love Tattoo, Versus Fine Jeweller,y and Wanderlust.
This carefully balanced mix ensures Nine Yards functions as a lived-in neighbourhood space rather than a purely transactional retail destination. It serves nearby residents while also attracting visitors seeking a unique Johannesburg experience.
