The term “sporting cathedral” couldn’t be more fitting for Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium. Designed as one of the signature venues for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, this architectural marvel has quickly become a beloved national landmark. Its elegant structure-echoing the South African flag-embodies unity, pride, and passion for sport.

At the heart of the stadium’s design lies the iconic arch, which spans 350 metres and soars 106 metres into the Durban skyline. This arch isn’t just eye-catching-it’s symbolic. The two legs of the arch rise separately on the southern side, only to merge on the northern end, representing a once-divided nation coming together through sport.

Completed at a cost of R3.4 billion, the stadium sits across from the historic Kings Park rugby stadium. Since its opening, Moses Mabhida Stadium has earned acclaim not only for its aesthetics but also for its engineering. It’s no surprise that it has reached iconic status both locally and abroad.

Moses Mabhida Stadium: More Than Just a Stadium

Moses Mabhida Stadium hosted seven high-profile matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, including the electrifying semi-final between Spain and Germany. Its seating capacity, typically 56,000, can expand to accommodate up to 85,000 spectators for special events-making it one of the most versatile venues in South Africa.

The stadium also features 120 luxury suites and 7,500 VIP seats, ideal for corporate events and elite viewing experiences. Its seat layout, designed to resemble the ebb and flow of the nearby Indian Ocean, ensures that every seat provides a clear view of the pitch.

But Moses Mabhida Stadium isn’t just for football. It’s a hotspot for adventure seekers. The stadium’s SkyCar lifts visitors to the top of the arch for breathtaking 360-degree views of Durban and the Indian Ocean. Those who prefer a challenge can take the 500-step Adventure Walk to reach the viewing platform on foot.

For adrenaline junkies, the stadium delivers with the Big Rush Big Swing-a Guinness World Record holder for the tallest swing of any kind. Brave souls leap 106 metres above the pitch and soar through the air in a 220-metre arc beneath the arch. It’s not just a thrill ride-it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

In January 2011, the stadium even transformed into a cricket arena, hosting a T20 match between South Africa and India. With 54,000 fans in attendance, it set a new record for the largest cricket crowd in Africa.

Moses Mabhida Stadium: A Legacy Beyond Sport

Moses Mabhida Stadium is named after a freedom fighter and anti-apartheid hero, Moses Mabhida. Beyond its sporting achievements, the stadium has delivered a major economic boost to the Durban region. Its construction and ongoing operation have created approximately 14,000 jobs and injected an estimated R155 billion into the local economy. The development of a surrounding urban recreational precinct-with shops, restaurants, gyms, and entertainment venues-has turned the area into a vibrant destination for both residents and tourists.

From 2010 Glory to 2025 Derby Drama

This weekend, the stadium returns to the national spotlight as it prepares to host one of the most highly anticipated matches in South African football history: the Nedbank Cup Final between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Set for Saturday, May 10 at 15:30, this clash marks the first Nedbank Cup final between these two giants since 2006.

Ticket demand for the match has been unprecedented. As soon as tickets went live on Monday, May 5, the official vendor-Open Tickets-was overwhelmed by traffic, crashing the website within minutes. The company quickly issued a statement assuring fans that in-person tickets remain available at Shoprite, Checkers, and Usave outlets nationwide.

General admission is priced at R150, with a limit of four tickets per customer. For those seeking VIP treatment, hospitality packages are available through SAIL (082 805 3150 or [email protected]).

Fans should be cautious, however, as the PSL has warned of counterfeit ticket scams and is urging supporters to buy only from official vendors. Security measures will be tight to prevent any disruptions.

A Clash of Titans in a Cathedral of Football

The stakes couldn’t be higher. Orlando Pirates are chasing a third straight Nedbank Cup title and their sixth trophy in three seasons. Kaizer Chiefs, on the other hand, are desperate to end a decade-long trophy drought.

Their last meeting, just a week ago, saw Pirates edge Chiefs 2-1 in front of a packed FNB Stadium. With passion at an all-time high, Moses Mabhida Stadium is ready to deliver a footballing spectacle for the ages.
