The Countdown to the Final Lap

After weeks of late-night revision and early morning study sessions, Gauteng’s Matric Class of 2025 is entering the final stretch of their school journey. The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed that the National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations will run from Tuesday, 21 October, to Thursday, 27 November 2025.

Over one million learners across South Africa will sit for their final matric exams, one of the largest cohorts in the country’s education history. Of these, 766,543 are full-time candidates registered under the DBE, while 137018 are part-time. Thousands more are writing under private assessment bodies such as the Independent Examinations Board (IEB) and the South African Comprehensive Assessment Institute.

Gauteng’s Role in the National Effort

Gauteng remains a focal point in the national education effort, with over 160,000 matriculants expected to sit for their exams. Schools across the province have transformed into well-coordinated examination centers, supported by district staff, invigilators, and psychosocial teams to ensure smooth operations.

Education authorities have emphasized the need for fairness, discipline, and emotional support throughout the examination period. The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that wellness counselors and educational psychologists will be on standby to assist learners facing anxiety or pressure.

    Integrity, Fairness, and Confidence

In the build-up to the final matric exams, the DBE hosted its annual Matric Pledge Signing Ceremony at Harry Gwala High School in Khayelitsha on 17 October. The symbolic event, replicated across Gauteng schools, reinforces honesty, fairness, and ethical conduct during exams.

Educators have used the ceremonies to motivate learners and encourage calm confidence. Many schools also held motivational assemblies and prayer sessions in the days leading up to the first papers.

    Mental Health and Exam Readiness

The Gauteng Department of Education has activated its Wellness and Learner Support Programme, offering counseling and wellness services to learners. Teachers across the province have set up study camps and morning mindfulness sessions to help learners manage stress and stay focused.

Officials continue to remind learners that balance is key, that rest, proper nutrition, and positive thinking are just as important as revision.

    After the Final Paper

Once the last exams are completed on Thursday, 27 November 2025, marking and moderation will begin under Umalusi’s supervision. Results are expected to be released in mid-January 2026.

For many learners, this moment marks both an ending and a new beginning, the gateway to tertiary studies, vocational paths, or entrepreneurship.

A Province Rooting for Its Learners

As Gauteng matrics prepare to take their seats, the province stands firmly behind them. Every paper written reflects the resilience, focus, and determination that have defined their academic journey.

Parents and communities are urged to support learners by ensuring quiet spaces for study, proper meals, and consistent encouragement. Teachers, meanwhile, continue to play a vital role in keeping learners motivated and organized until the final day.

    Your Next Step

To all Gauteng matrics: your time has come. Stay calm, trust your preparation, and approach each paper with integrity and confidence.

For the complete timetable, study resources, and subject guidelines, visit the Department of Basic Education’s official website or your school portal.

Success begins here ; one paper, one effort, one future at a time.
