Level Up Campaign Empowers Soweto Learners to Apply for University Opportunities

Soweto youth are rising above challenges as a life-changing initiative brings hope to their academic futures. In the heart of Soweto, where ambition often competes with limited resources, the Level Up 2.0 Campaign, run by the Schincheonji Volunteers, recently returned to Bopasenatla Secondary School to help high school learners unlock access to higher education. This initiative is not just about forms and deadlines it’s about restoring hope and showing Soweto youth that their dreams of university education are possible, no matter their background.

Many students in under-resourced communities like Soweto often struggle to navigate the complex university application process. Whether it’s not knowing how to apply, lacking internet access, or simply being unaware of deadlines and options, the obstacles are real. The Level Up Campaign breaks these barriers by giving learners the tools, information, and personal guidance they need to make informed choices about their future. With the campaign’s return to the school, learners are reminded that they are not alone on their academic journeys and that their potential is worth investing in.
Bridging the information gap in underserved communities
One of the campaign’s biggest strengths is how it connects learners with valuable information. In many public schools especially in townships university prep resources are scarce. Learners often depend on teachers who face heavy workloads, making it hard to offer individual support. The Level Up Campaign fills this gap by providing clear guidance and direct access to education experts.
Xihluke Mabaso, head of the Schincheonji Volunteers in Gauteng, shared the group’s mission: “We are here to empower learners with the knowledge and support they need to apply for university and access funding options.”
The campaign invited academic advisors, university representatives, and NSFAS officials. Together, they offered detailed advice on how to apply for university and secure bursary support.
This work matters because many Soweto youth don’t know how to begin the application process. Through workshops, Q&A sessions, and one-on-one help, the campaign ensures every learner gets the guidance they need.
A community effort to uplift and inspire future leaders
Education is not just a personal journey it’s a community investment. That’s why the Level Up Campaign partnered with institutions like Wits University, Gauteng City College, and non-profits such as Tomorrow Trust. These partnerships offered both academic and emotional support. Two full bursaries were awarded to top-performing students.
To further inspire learners, the campaign featured Tiisetso Thoka, known as DJ Thomas from Skeem Saam. His motivational talk focused on overcoming peer pressure, believing in dreams, and taking bold steps toward success. His words struck a chord with learners. They saw that success is possible even for those who come from backgrounds like theirs.
This multi-pronged support covering application help, financial guidance, and motivation makes the Level Up Campaign stand out in education development. It shows the power of collaboration when NGOs, government, schools, and communities work toward a shared goal.
Transforming futures one learner at a time
The Level Up Campaign is more than just a once-off event. It represents a sustainable model of uplifting Soweto youth through consistent mentorship, real-world resources, and a powerful message: You can dream bigger, and you can achieve it. By returning to schools like Bopasenatla Secondary, the campaign ensures that learners are reminded of their worth and are guided every step of the way through the application journey.
In a country where the gap between potential and opportunity remains wide, this campaign brings the bridge. With continued support and funding, initiatives like Level Up can scale to more schools and provinces impacting thousands more young people ready to lead South Africa into a brighter future.
