About the Position
The Medical Officer – General Surgery role is pivotal in providing clinical services within the hospital’s Emergency Medicine Department. Key Responsibilities:
- Shift work within the Emergency Medicine Department.
- Clinical management of patients referred to the Emergency Department.

This position offers a joint appointment between the Gauteng Department of Health and academic institutions, such as the University of Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, and Sefako Makgatho University.
Requirements
To qualify for the Medical Officer – General Surgery role, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Qualifications:
- MBChB or a relevant qualification allowing registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Practitioner.
- Current HPCSA registration as a Medical Practitioner for the 2025/26 period.
- Experience:
- Grade 1: No experience required after registration with HPCSA (for South African qualified applicants).
- Grade 2: Minimum of 5 years of appropriate experience as a Medical Practitioner after registration.
- Grade 3: Minimum of 10 years of appropriate experience as a Medical Practitioner after registration.
- Additional Skills (Preferred but not essential):
- Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
- Basic Surgical Skills
- Primaries training.
Remuneration Package
