Gauteng parents who applied for Grade 1 and Grade 8 places for the 2027 school year have until 12:00 on Friday, 11 September 2026, to submit outstanding certified documents. The Gauteng Department of Education said applications without the required documentation, particularly valid proof of home address, will be regarded as incomplete and will not receive placement offers.

The deadline follows the closure of the school admissions for 2027 online application period on 4 September. More than 346 000 individual learners are seeking places at Gauteng public schools, putting the focus on completing applications before the placement process begins.

More Than 346 000 Learners Applied for School Places

Gauteng Education MEC Lebogang Maile said 805 688 applications were submitted through the online admissions system before applications closed at midnight on Friday, 4 September.

However, the number does not mean more than 800 000 learners are seeking school places.

Parents can apply to several schools for one learner, meaning individual learners may account for multiple applications.

According to figures released by the department, 357 468 parents and guardians registered on the admissions system, while 346 877 individual learners applied for placement.

    This includes:

    • 169 396 Grade 1 learners
    • 177 481 Grade 8 learners
    • 346 877 individual learners in total
    • 805 688 individual school applications

Maile said the figures demonstrate the scale of the placement process and show that demand is concentrated around particular schools and geographical areas.

Outstanding Documents Due by Midday on Friday

Parents who successfully submitted online applications but still have outstanding documents now face a separate deadline.

Maile said parents and guardians must submit or upload certified copies of outstanding documents by 12:00 on Friday, 11 September 2026.

This means parents who already submitted an application should check whether all required supporting documents were successfully provided.

The deadline does not reopen applications for parents who missed the 4 September application closing date. It applies to outstanding documentation linked to applications submitted during the admissions period.

    Which Documents Must Parents Submit?

The documents required depend on the learner and the information supplied during the application.

According to the department, required documents include the parent’s South African identity document or passport and the child’s birth certificate or passport.

Depending on the application, parents may also need to provide:

    • A permanent residence permit
    • A study permit
    • Proof of home address
    • Proof of work address
    • The learner’s most recent Grade 7 school report for Grade 8 applications
    • A clinic card or immunisation report for Grade 1 applications

Parents should ensure the documents they submit meet the department’s requirements and that certified documents are provided where required.

Proof of Home Address Could Determine Placement

Proof of home address is particularly important because residential information is used during the placement process.

Maile warned that applications without certified proof of home address by the deadline will be considered incomplete.

Applications supported by fraudulent or invalid documents will also be regarded as incomplete and will not receive placement offers.

The address supplied during the application process matters because the department uses school feeder zones and other placement criteria when allocating learners.

Parents should therefore ensure that the address documentation corresponds with the information supplied in their application.

Placement Offers Start on 15 October

Completing the application does not mean a learner has automatically secured a place at one of the schools selected.

The next major stage of the admissions process is placement.

According to the department’s admissions timetable, placement offers are expected to begin on 15 October 2026 and continue until learners requiring places have been processed.

Parents will receive placement offers and will have seven days to accept or decline an offer.

High demand at particular schools means not every learner can necessarily be placed at a parent’s preferred school.

The department said the application figures show significant concentrations of demand in particular schools and communities, placing pressure on available capacity.

Gauteng Faces a Large School Placement Task

The scale of the 2027 admissions process reflects the size of Gauteng’s public education system.

The province has more than 2.8 million learners across more than 2 200 public schools, according to information released by the department.

Demand is particularly important at Grade 1 and Grade 8 level because these are the two entry grades managed through the provincial online admissions process.

Maile said the admissions figures give the department a clearer picture of where demand for places is concentrated.

The challenge now moves from receiving applications to verifying information, assessing capacity and placing individual learners.

Special School Placements Follow Different Considerations

The department has separately acknowledged pressure on Gauteng’s special school placement system.

According to figures released in September, 702 learners were awaiting special school placement, although some were already receiving education or other support while waiting.

The department said placement at a special school is not determined only by whether a classroom has an available seat.

Factors can include specialist capacity, therapeutic services, transport, hostel accommodation where required, proximity to the learner’s family and whether a particular school can appropriately meet the learner’s needs.

Gauteng has increased its number of special schools from 94 in 2012 to 131, while additional learners requiring support are accommodated in mainstream schools and through other support interventions.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

For parents who submitted Grade 1 or Grade 8 applications, the immediate priority is to confirm whether any documents remain outstanding.

The critical deadline is 12:00 on Friday, 11 September 2026.

Parents should pay particular attention to proof of home address because the department has specifically warned that applications without valid certified proof by the deadline will be regarded as incomplete.

Once documentation is complete, families will need to prepare for the placement period beginning on 15 October.

Parents should also monitor their application status and respond to placement offers within the required seven day period.

    • 15 October 2026: Placement offers expected to begin
    • Seven days: Time parents have to accept or decline a placement offer

Parents can access the official GDE Admissions System to manage their applications and check their status.

The department’s toll free contact number is 0800 000 789, while enquiries can also be sent to [email protected].

Parents Have Until Friday to Complete Applications

With the initial online application period now closed, attention has shifted to ensuring submitted applications are complete.

Parents with outstanding documents should not wait for the placement period to address missing paperwork. The department has set 12:00 on 11 September as the deadline, with proof of home address among the documents that could determine whether an application proceeds to placement.

The next major milestone comes on 15 October, when Gauteng’s 2027 Grade 1 and Grade 8 placement period is expected to begin.
