More than 210 000 applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 placements were submitted within four hours of the Gauteng Department of Education opening its 2027 Online Admissions system on Wednesday, 5 August 2026. The school admissions process affects thousands of families across Gauteng who are applying for public school placements for the 2027 academic year. The department said the online platform opened at 8am and processed applications without major technical problems, while parents are being urged to apply well before the closing date of Friday, 4 September 2026.

According to the department, the strong response on the first day reflects the high demand for places at public schools across the province. Officials said early applications allow the department to plan for classrooms, teachers and learner support services ahead of the 2027 school year.

More Than 210 000 Applications Received on Opening Day

The Gauteng Department of Education said the online admissions system officially opened at 8 am on Wednesday.

By 12pm, a total of 210 055 applications had already been submitted for Grade 1 and Grade 8 learners across the province.

Demand began building before applications officially opened.

The department said 12 058 parents had already joined the online queue between 7.30am and 7.59am to submit applications as soon as the system became available.

Officials added that the admissions platform operated smoothly during the first morning, with no major technical issues reported.

Parents Urged to Apply Early for 2027 School Placements

Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Lebogang Maile encouraged parents to submit their applications as early as possible instead of waiting until the final days.

According to Maile, applying early helps the department understand enrolment trends and allocate resources where they are needed most.

He said the information collected through applications assists officials in planning for:

    • Additional teachers
    • Teacher support materials
    • Learner transport services
    • School nutrition programmes
    • Classroom capacity

The department said this planning process is essential to ensure schools are adequately prepared for the new academic year.

Tshwane West and Ekurhuleni South Record the Highest Demand

Early application data show that Tshwane West and Ekurhuleni South have recorded the highest demand since applications opened.

Among secondary schools, the highest number of applications was recorded at:

    • Hoërskool Langenhoven with 1 168 applications
    • Alberton High School with 1 098 applications
    • Hoërskool Akasia with 917 applications

Among primary schools, Rachel de Beer Primary School received the highest number of applications, with 474 submitted during the opening hours.

The department said these figures provide an early indication of schools experiencing high demand, although applications remain open until September.

Department Warns Parents Against School Placement Scams

The Gauteng Department of Education has warned parents not to pay anyone claiming they can secure school placements.

Officials said the Online Admissions system is completely free and that no individual or organisation can guarantee admission in exchange for payment.

The department urged parents to use only official admissions channels and to report any suspected fraudulent activity.

Parents who need assistance can receive free support at:

    • Any of the department’s 48 walk in centres
    • Gauteng’s 15 district offices
    • Participating public schools across the province

Officials are available to help parents complete applications and upload supporting documents where required.

How to Complete Your Gauteng 2027 School Application

The department reminded parents that completing the online application is only one part of the admissions process.

    Parents should remember to:

    • Apply to a maximum of five schools
    • Select the Home option where required
    • Submit or upload supporting documents within seven days of applying
    • Use a reliable cellphone number to receive SMS updates
    • Keep application reference numbers for future enquiries

The department also confirmed that applications can be completed using a cellphone.

Learners applying to Schools of Specialisation will still be required to complete placement assessments relevant to their chosen field.

Important Dates for Gauteng 2027 School Admissions

Parents should take note of the following dates:

    • Applications opened on Wednesday, 5 August 2026 at 8am
    • Applications close at midnight on Friday, 4 September 2026
    • Supporting documents must be submitted within seven days after completing an application

Applications can be submitted through the Gauteng Department of Education Online Admissions website or with assistance at designated support centres.

Why Demand for Gauteng Public Schools Remains High

Gauteng continues to experience population growth, placing increasing pressure on public schools across Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Sedibeng and the West Rand.

Many schools receive thousands of applications every admissions cycle, particularly those with strong academic records or located in high demand residential areas.

According to the department, application data helps education officials determine where additional classrooms, teachers and learner support services may be needed.

Officials continue to encourage parents to avoid waiting until the closing date, as early applications assist with planning and reduce last minute administrative challenges.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

Parents applying for Grade 1 and Grade 8 placements should begin the process as soon as possible to avoid unnecessary delays.

Applying early provides more time to:

    • Upload outstanding documents
    • Correct application details if necessary
    • Visit a walk in centre for assistance
    • Receive updates from the department before placements begin

Parents should also remember that submitting an application does not complete the process unless all required supporting documents are provided within seven days.

The department has again reminded families not to pay anyone promising guaranteed placement, as the admissions system remains free.
