Fuel Price Update: Diesel Increase Reduced Bringing Relief for South Africans

South Africans will get unexpected relief at the pumps in May after the government corrected an error that had overstated a fuel price increase. The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources confirmed that diesel users will now pay nearly R1.00 less per litre than initially announced.

The correction directly benefits motorists, transport operators, and businesses across Gauteng, where fuel costs significantly impact the price of goods and services. While fuel prices are still increasing overall, the revised figures ease some of the financial pressure facing households and industries.

Officials say the adjustment aligns with temporary fuel levy relief measures introduced to cushion consumers, though these savings are expected to be reversed in the coming months.

Government Revises Diesel Price Increase Downwards

The Central Energy Fund reissued its fuel price adjustments after identifying an error in the diesel calculations.

According to the department, the wholesale diesel increase has been reduced from R6.19 per litre to R5.27 per litre, reflecting the correct application of a 93 cents per litre levy relief.

Officials said the relief had not been properly factored into the earlier pricing model, leading to an overstatement of the increase.

The correction does not affect petrol prices, which remain unchanged due to the absence of additional relief measures for petrol users.

What the Updated Fuel Prices Look Like

The revised fuel price adjustments for May 2026 are:

    • Petrol 93: increase of R3.27 per litre
    • Petrol 95: increase of R3.27 per litre
    • Diesel 0.05% (wholesale): increase of R5.27 per litre
    • Diesel 0.005% (wholesale): increase of R5.27 per litre
    • Illuminating paraffin: increase of R4.22 per litre
    • LPGAS (Gauteng): increase of R5.07 per kg

Although increases remain across all fuel types, diesel users will now face a lower-than-expected adjustment.

Gauteng Motorists See Slight Cost Relief

In inland areas such as Gauteng, the corrected prices translate into slightly lower costs than previously projected.

    Inland Prices (April vs May):

    • 93 Petrol: R23.25 → R26.52
    • 95 Petrol: R23.36 → R26.63
    • Diesel 0.05%: R25.90 → R31.17
    • Diesel 0.005%: R26.11 → R31.88
    • Illuminating Paraffin: R24.21 → R28.43
    • LPGAS: R36.05 → R41.12

While still higher than April, the revised diesel pricing offers short-term relief for consumers and businesses reliant on fuel.

    Relief Offers Short-Term Breathing Room

The correction is expected to provide temporary relief across key sectors of the economy.

Lower-than-expected diesel increases may ease pressure on:

    • Transport and logistics companies
    • Food and retail supply chains
    • Delivery and courier services
    • Small businesses dependent on fuel

Economists note that diesel costs are often passed through to consumers, meaning even a small adjustment can influence pricing across multiple industries.

Temporary Measure to Be Reversed in Coming Months

Despite the immediate relief, officials have warned that the benefit will not last.

According to the department, the fuel levy relief applied in May will be phased out over June and July:

    • June 2026:
      • Petrol increases by R1.50 per litre
      • Diesel increases by R1.97 per litre
    • July 2026:
      • Petrol increases by a further R1.50 per litre
      • Diesel increases by R1.96 per litre

Officials said the phased approach is intended to reduce sudden price shocks while restoring full levy levels.

Why Diesel Relief Matters for Gauteng

Gauteng’s economy is particularly sensitive to diesel price changes due to its reliance on road transport.

    Diesel is widely used in:

    • Freight and logistics networks
    • Commercial vehicle fleets
    • Industrial operations
    • Backup power generation

Because of this, any reduction in diesel cost increases can have a ripple effect across the province’s economy.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

The revised diesel price increase provides limited but meaningful relief for residents in Gauteng.

In practical terms, this may result in:

    • Slightly lower transport cost increases than expected
    • Reduced pressure on delivery fees and service charges
    • Temporary easing of inflation linked to fuel costs

However, residents should expect fuel-related expenses to rise again as relief measures are phased out in the coming months.

    Ongoing Pressure on Fuel Prices

Despite the correction, broader fuel price pressures remain in place.

According to officials, fuel prices continue to be influenced by:

    • Global oil price fluctuations
    • Exchange rate volatility
    • Local taxes and levies
    • Refining and distribution costs

These factors mean that while short-term relief is possible, long-term price stability remains uncertain.

FAQ: Diesel Price Relief in May 2026

Why are diesel users getting relief?
An error in applying fuel levy relief was corrected, reducing the overall price increase.

How much cheaper is diesel now?
The increase was reduced by nearly R1.00 per litre compared to the initial announcement.

    Are petrol prices also lower?
No. Petrol prices remain unchanged as no additional relief was applied.

    Will the relief continue?
No. The relief is temporary and will be reversed in June and July.

Who benefits the most from this change?
Transport operators, businesses, and consumers who rely on diesel-powered services.

    What Happens Next

The Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources will continue to monitor fuel price adjustments as the corrected figures take effect in May.

Officials have confirmed that the phased removal of fuel levy relief will proceed in June and July, leading to further increases unless new interventions are introduced.

Analysts are expected to track global oil prices and currency movements ahead of the next fuel price announcement, as these factors will determine whether additional relief or further increases are likely.
