Job Responsibilities

Qualifications and Experience
To qualify for the First Officer position at South African Airways, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Educational Requirements:
- A Matric Certificate or equivalent (Grade 12 or N3) from a SAQA accredited institution
- Compulsory subjects include Mathematics (or Statistics 101) and English (with a minimum of a C symbol for Standard Grade or D symbol for Higher Grade) as well as either Physical Science or Computer Science.
- Licensing Requirements:
- A valid South African Airline Transport Pilot’s License (ATPL) or a Commercial Pilot License (CPL), with completion of all the ground subjects required for the ATPL.
- A valid ATPL must be obtained within four years of employment.
- A multi-engine instrument rating is required.
- Flying Experience:
- A minimum of 1,500 flying hours, including at least 200 hours on multi-engine aircraft.
- Medical Requirements:
- A valid Class 1 medical certificate.
- Nationality:
- Applicants must be South African citizens and possess a valid South African Passport.
