Every year, matric students across South Africa face one of the most important challenges of their school careers — the final exams. For the Class of 2025, DStv and MultiChoice are stepping up to make exam preparation easier, more interactive, and more accessible than ever before. Through Mzansi Wethu (DStv channel 163) and WhatsApp, learners can now get live support, exam tips, and study materials designed to help them pass with confidence.

A New Way to Study: TV Meets WhatsApp

MultiChoice has announced that Mzansi Wethu will use a “twin approach” to support matriculants. On the one hand, students can tune into live broadcasts for revision lessons, study hacks, and exam tips. On the other hand, they can interact directly by sending subject-related questions to a dedicated WhatsApp number.

By sending the word “wassup” to the Woza Matrics WhatsApp account at 076 640 4885, learners can submit their questions, which will be answered live on TV. This makes exam prep both personal and interactive — students are no longer just viewers but active participants in their own learning.

    Why This Initiative Matters

The pressure to perform well in matric exams can be overwhelming. A supportive study system is vital, and that’s exactly what DStv is offering. According to MultiChoice, the platform is designed to be clean, inclusive, spam-free, and focused on helping learners reach their academic goals.

In 2024, South Africa recorded an official matric pass rate of 87.3%, up from 82.9% in 2023. While this shows improvement, the “real” matric pass rate — calculated based on Grade 10 enrolments — was 55.9%. These figures highlight the challenges many learners face and the need for additional support. With DStv’s Woza Matrics initiative, more students may be able to bridge learning gaps and prepare effectively for their exams.

    What Subjects Are Covered?

Mzansi Wethu’s Woza Matrics show focuses on four key subjects that often present the greatest challenges to learners:

    • Mathematics
    • Mathematical Literacy
    • Life Sciences
    • Physical Sciences

These subjects are critical for learners aiming to pursue careers in science, technology, medicine, or business, and mastering them can open doors to tertiary education opportunities.

    Broadcast Schedule and Access

The show airs Monday to Thursday at 16:00, with repeats at 23:00 and 05:00 for learners who may not be available during the main broadcast. To make revision even more accessible, the lessons are also available on DStv Catch Up and DStv Stream, meaning learners can watch at any time that suits their study schedule.

Beyond TV, learners can also find support on Facebook and TikTok, where supplementary information and study materials are shared. This multi-platform approach ensures that support is available where learners already spend their time.

    Exam Focus Areas and Dates

One of the biggest strengths of the Woza Matrics initiative is its structured schedule of revision topics. Here’s a breakdown of key dates and focus areas:

    Mathematics

    • 29 Sept – Algebra (Grade 11 revision)
    • 6 Oct – Number patterns, sequences, and series
    • 13 Oct – Functions
    • 20 Oct – Calculus
    • 22 Oct – Analytical geometry
    • 27 Oct – Trigonometry
    • 29 Oct – Euclidean geometry

    Mathematical Literacy

    • 2 Oct – Income tax
    • 9 Oct – Income, expenditure, and break-even
    • 16 Oct – Summarising data
    • 21 Oct – Conversions
    • 23 Oct – Calculating perimeter, area, and volume
    • 28 Oct – Paper 1 exam revision
    • 30 Oct – Paper 2 exam revision

    Life Sciences

    • 1 Oct – Male and female structures
    • 8 Oct – Menstrual cycle and fertilisation
    • 15 Oct – Responding to the environment (humans and plants)
    • 10 Nov – Endocrine system and homeostasis
    • 11 Nov – Genetic crosses
    • 12 Nov – Theories of evolution
    • 13 Nov – Protein synthesis and meiosis

    Physical Sciences

    • 30 Sept – Simplifying vertical projectile motion
    • 7 Oct – Simplifying work, energy, and power
    • 14 Oct – Simplifying electric circuits
    • 3 Nov – Dealing with electrostatics
    • 4 Nov – Naming organic compounds
    • 5 Nov – Physical properties and organic reactions
    • 6 Nov – Electrochemical cells

This structured approach helps students focus their study efforts week by week, ensuring they cover all important exam areas before sitting down to write.

    • Interactive learning: Students can ask questions via WhatsApp and get answers live.
    • Accessible content: Broadcasts are repeated and available online, so no one misses out.
    • Relevant focus: Lessons are aligned with key matric exam topics.
    • Study-friendly: Bite-sized, subject-specific sessions make revision manageable.
