    The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation, established in 2005, is dedicated to fostering entrepreneurial talent and creating a sustainable future for Southern Africa. The foundation’s mission is to empower young individuals with the skills and mindset necessary to overcome historical inequalities and drive economic and social transformation.

    In line with this vision, the foundation offers the Allan Gray Orbis High School Scholarship, designed to identify and nurture promising entrepreneurial talent among young South Africans.

    About the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation High School Scholarship

    The Allan Gray Orbis Foundation High School Scholarship is an opportunity for South African students entering Grade 8 in 2027. Open to those currently in Grade 6, the scholarship aims to support students who demonstrate academic excellence, entrepreneurial potential, and financial need. Through this program, students will gain access to a variety of resources and opportunities that will help shape their future as entrepreneurs.

    The scholarship covers numerous expenses, ensuring that students can focus on their studies and extracurricular development without the burden of financial constraints. It also provides access to a community of like-minded individuals, mentorship, and entrepreneurial workshops that will help scholars refine their skills and knowledge.

    Benefits of the Allan Gray Orbis High School Scholarship

    The Allan Gray Orbis High School Scholarship is comprehensive, covering a wide range of expenses to ensure that recipients can focus on their academic and personal growth without financial worries. The scholarship covers the following costs:

    • Tuition Fees: Full coverage for the scholar’s education.
    • Boarding: Accommodation costs are fully paid for students who need to board at a selected school.
    • Stationery and Textbooks: Essential materials for students to succeed in their studies.
    • Uniforms and Casual Clothing: Support for scholars’ day-to-day clothing needs.
    • Toiletries: Personal hygiene products are provided.
    • Extra Mural Activities: Coverage for participation in sports and other extracurricular activities.
    • Monthly Allowance: A stipend to cover personal expenses.

    In addition to these financial benefits, scholars are also given access to workshops, seminars, an annual entrepreneurial conference, and an online learning platform. They will be mentored by a program officer who will guide them in their journey towards becoming successful entrepreneurs.

    Eligibility Requirements for the Scholarship

    To be eligible for the Allan Gray Orbis High School Scholarship, applicants must meet certain criteria:

    1. South African Citizenship: The applicant must be a South African citizen, and at least one parent must also be a citizen.
    2. Age Requirements: Applicants must be between the ages of 11 and 12 years old (born in 2013 or 2014).
    3. Grade Level: Applicants must be in Grade 6 in the 2025 academic year and entering Grade 8 in 2027.
    4. Financial Need: The total household income must not exceed R20 000 per month.
    5. Academic Performance: Applicants must have achieved a minimum of 70% in English and Mathematics in both Grade 5 and Grade 6.
    6. Overall Average: A minimum overall average of 70% in Grade 5 and Grade 6 is required.
    7. Entrepreneurial Mindset: Applicants should show a keen interest in entrepreneurship and business ownership. Traits such as leadership, curiosity, problem-solving, opportunity identification, and a growth mindset are essential for consideration.

    Application Process

    Students interested in applying for the scholarship can do so through either an online or manual application process. Below are the steps involved in each application method:

    Online Application Process

    1. Register: Applicants must register on the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation Scholarship website.
    2. Complete the Application: After logging in, candidates must complete the online application form.
    3. Upload Supporting Documents: Applicants must upload the required documentation, including certified copies of their birth certificates, parents’ ID documents, school reports, proof of income, and other relevant documents.

    Manual Application Process

    1. Download and Complete the Application Form
    2. Prepare Documents: Gather the required documents as listed above.
    3. Submit the Application: The completed form and supporting documents must be submitted either by hand delivery or post to the relevant addresses in Cape Town or Johannesburg.

    Required Documentation

    Applicants must submit the following documents as part of their application:

    • A certified copy of the unabridged birth certificate.
    • Certified copies of the parent or legal guardian’s ID documents.
    • Grade 5 term 4 and Grade 6 term 2 reports.
    • Proof of the parent’s or guardian’s income (e.g., payslips, tax statements, or bank statements).
    • If applicable, death certificates, divorce decrees, or proof of legal guardianship.

    Selection Process

    Once applications have been submitted, the selection process includes several stages:

    1. Foundation Exam: Successful applicants will be invited to write an exam in Mathematics and English in December 2025.
    2. Interviews: Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews in February to March 2026.
    3. Placement Schools: Applicants who are successful in the interview stage will be placed at selected schools for further assessment.
    4. Scholarship Award: Finalists who are recommended by placement schools will receive the scholarship. A memorandum of agreement will then be signed between the foundation, the school, and the scholar’s custodian.

    Deadline for Applications

    Applications for the 2027 Allan Gray Orbis High School Scholarship must be submitted by 15 September 2025 at 17:00 SAST. Late applications will not be considered, so it is crucial to submit all materials before the deadline.
