According to the Gauteng Department of Health, the upgrades include new MRI machines, digital imaging systems, and extended service hours. MRI Backlogs Prompt Urgent Intervention
The initiative comes in response to severe diagnostic delays that have long plagued Gauteng hospitals. According to Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko, hospitals such as Steve Biko Academic, Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg, Dr George Mukhari, and Chris Hani Baragwanath are receiving newly installed MRI machines to help address these challenges.
At Charlotte Maxeke, over 2 300 patients were waiting for MRI appointments earlier this year, while Dr George Mukhari reported a queue of more than 400 patients.
Faster Diagnosis Through Extended Services
By investing in modern imaging systems, the department hopes to drastically cut waiting times and increase access to critical diagnostic services. The new MRI machines, already operational at some sites, are complemented by extended scanning hours and improved staff capacity.
Patients with urgent cases are now prioritized and, in some hospitals, can receive same-day scans. In cases where MRI services are not available locally, patients are transferred to nearby facilities that can accommodate them, based on the severity of their condition.
Digital Systems Streamline Imaging and Reporting
These upgrades go beyond just equipment. Hospitals have also received improved digital infrastructure, including Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS).
PACS eliminates the need to physically transport scan images, allowing for quicker sharing between departments and faster reporting by radiologists. By digitizing these processes, Gauteng hospitals can now handle higher patient volumes without sacrificing accuracy or quality of care.
Rahima Moosa and Steve Biko Lead with Results
The overhaul follows successful upgrades at Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, where the introduction of advanced imaging services has significantly improved diagnosis rates and reduced patient congestion.
Additionally, Steve Biko Academic Hospital recently received R26 million worth of upgrades that included two MRI machines, a PET-CT scanner, and two cardiac catheterization labs. These investments reflect a broader strategy to elevate the standard of healthcare in Gauteng through reliable, modern equipment and better resource allocation.
Maintaining Momentum and Preventing Downtime
MEC Nkomo-Ralehoko emphasized that service-level agreements are in place to reduce equipment downtime and ensure the new systems operate consistently.
Maintenance protocols have been tightened, and staff have undergone additional training to manage the upgraded systems efficiently. The department is also exploring the use of helium-free MRI machines to address risks associated with cable theft and global helium shortages.

While this technology overhaul is a step forward, the department acknowledges that ongoing oversight and continued investment will be necessary to maintain progress. The long-term success of this initiative depends on maintaining staff levels, enforcing accountability, and expanding access to underserved areas.
