Illegal mining in Gauteng has triggered an intensified security response across the West Rand, with police and soldiers conducting repeated operations in Fochville, Westonaria, Mohlakeng and surrounding communities during 2026. The latest operation saw 121 suspected illegal miners arrested in Mphahla village near Fochville on Tuesday, 29 September, while five firearms, ammunition, gold bearing material and mining equipment were recovered.

The arrests are significant beyond the number of suspects taken into custody. They form part of a wider crackdown in an area where authorities have repeatedly recovered firearms, explosives, mining equipment and suspected gold bearing material.

The South African Police Service and South African National Defence Force are conducting the operations under Operation Prosper, with other government agencies and private mine security teams involved in some deployments.

Why the West Rand Has Become a Major Focus

The West Rand has emerged as one of the main areas targeted by Operation Prosper in Gauteng.

Fochville, Westonaria, Randfontein and Mohlakeng have all been targeted during major operations this year.

In July, a joint statement by SAPS and the SANDF identified Gauteng as one of the provinces where major illegal mining operations were taking place. Authorities reported 217 arrests during an operation at Losberg Kloof Mine in Westonaria and another 121 arrests during an intelligence led operation in Randfontein.

Another operation in Mohlakeng resulted in dozens of arrests and the seizure of generators and more than 100 bags of suspected gold bearing material.

The pattern has continued into September.

    SABC News

Guns, Explosives and Mining Equipment Recovered

The latest Fochville operation provides an indication of the type of equipment authorities are finding during illegal mining raids.

Police said five firearms were recovered in Mphahla village, including three pistols, an AK 47 rifle and a homemade pistol. Ammunition was also seized.

Officers recovered phendukas, gas bottles and suspected gold bearing material.

Earlier operations have produced similar seizures.

On 8 September, police arrested 10 suspects during an Operation Prosper deployment at Kloof Gold Mine in Westonaria. One suspect was arrested after police recovered an AK 47 rifle, ammunition and suspected gold bearing material.

Later in September, an operation at Jumpers Informal Settlement in the Cleveland policing precinct resulted in the recovery of explosives and equipment suspected of being used for illegal mining.

Police also recovered 100 bags containing suspected gold bearing material during the Cleveland operation.

These seizures show that Gauteng’s illegal mining response extends beyond arrests. Authorities are also targeting the equipment, weapons and material associated with the operations.

    Operation Prosper Expands Across Gauteng

Illegal mining is not confined to the West Rand.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi told the provincial legislature in February that illegal mining was affecting communities in the West Rand, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng.

The provincial government said at the time that armed groups involved in illegal mining were using high calibre weapons in disputes over mining sites.

Operations have since taken place across several of these areas.

In September, police and soldiers targeted Jumpers Informal Settlement within Johannesburg’s Cleveland policing precinct. Earlier operations have also taken place in parts of Ekurhuleni.

The deployments involve different agencies depending on the operation.

During the latest Fochville raid, Gauteng police worked with the SANDF, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, Department of Home Affairs immigration officials and Sibanye Stillwater’s tactical security team.

The operation started at about 3am, when soldiers cordoned off the area before police and mine security personnel moved in.

Wedela Shooting Adds to West Rand Security Concerns

Security on the West Rand has received further attention following the mass shooting at a tavern in Wedela, near Carletonville, on 26 September.

The death toll increased to 18 after another victim died in hospital.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni subsequently established a multidisciplinary team to investigate the shooting.

Police said the investigation involves experienced murder and robbery detectives, Crime Intelligence and Crime Scene Investigation personnel.

Operation Prosper has also been instructed to intensify operations in Wedela and surrounding areas.

However, police have not established publicly that the Fochville illegal mining arrests are connected to the Wedela shooting.

Major General Fred Kekana said the Fochville operation was intelligence driven and described the Wedela shooting as a separate incident being investigated by its own team.

This distinction is important as investigations continue.

Illegal Mining Has Affected Gauteng Communities Beyond Crime Operations

The impact of illegal mining in Gauteng has also raised concerns about residents and infrastructure.

In his February State of the Province Address, Lesufi said more than 600 families had fled their homes in January following violence, threats and attacks associated with illegal mining.

Communities in parts of the West Rand have also raised concerns about unstable ground and sinkholes.

In May, residents of Witpoortjie Estate on the West Rand reported concerns about large sinkholes, while illegal mining tunnels had been identified beneath shops and roads in parts of Roodepoort.

The combination of abandoned mining infrastructure, unlawful excavation and criminal activity has therefore created different challenges across affected communities.

Law enforcement operations address the criminal component, while damaged land and infrastructure can require intervention from municipalities and other government departments.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

For Gauteng residents, particularly those living on the West Rand, the recent operations indicate that the police and SANDF deployment against illegal mining is continuing rather than being limited to isolated raids.

Residents in Fochville, Westonaria, Randfontein and Mohlakeng may continue seeing joint law enforcement operations as authorities target suspected mining sites and associated criminal activity.

The recovery of firearms and explosives also means some operations involve potentially dangerous sites and suspects.

Residents should avoid approaching suspected illegal mining sites, abandoned shafts or explosives and should report suspected criminal activity to SAPS.

The broader Gauteng operation also means the issue is not limited to mining communities. Authorities have identified illegal mining activity in Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni as well as the West Rand.

    FAQ

Why are police targeting illegal mining on Gauteng’s West Rand?

The West Rand contains numerous mining areas and has been the location of repeated illegal mining operations. Authorities have conducted raids in areas including Fochville, Westonaria, Randfontein and Mohlakeng.

How many suspected illegal miners were arrested in Fochville?

Police confirmed that 121 suspected illegal miners were arrested in Mphahla village within the Fochville policing precinct on 29 September 2026.

    What is Operation Prosper?

Operation Prosper is a joint security operation involving SAPS and the SANDF that targets illegal mining, organised crime, gang violence and associated offences. Other agencies can participate depending on the operation.

Is the Fochville operation connected to the Wedela tavern shooting?

Police have not confirmed a connection. Major General Fred Kekana said the Fochville raid was an intelligence driven illegal mining operation and that the Wedela shooting was being investigated separately.

Which parts of Gauteng are affected by illegal mining?

The Gauteng provincial government has identified the West Rand, Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng as areas affected by illegal mining.

Gauteng Illegal Mining Operations Set to Continue

The 121 arrests in Fochville are the latest development in a wider campaign against illegal mining across Gauteng rather than an isolated police operation.

Repeated raids in Westonaria, Mohlakeng, Randfontein, Fochville and Johannesburg have resulted in arrests and the recovery of firearms, explosives, suspected gold bearing material and mining equipment.

Police have said Operation Prosper will continue targeting illegal mining and associated criminal activity in Gauteng, keeping the West Rand at the centre of the province’s ongoing enforcement effort.
