Millions of South African parents and caregivers who rely on the SASSA Child Support Grant can expect payments to continue on schedule in July 2026, with grants set to be paid from Monday, 6 July 2026. The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has also increased the income thresholds used to determine eligibility for the grant, potentially allowing more low-income households to qualify. The changes are particularly relevant for Gauteng families facing rising living costs, childcare expenses and ongoing economic pressures.

The updated income limits form part of broader adjustments affecting social grants in 2026 and could impact both current and prospective beneficiaries.

When Will the SASSA Child Support Grant Be Paid in July 2026?

According to the latest SASSA payment schedule, Child Support Grants and other children’s grants are expected to be paid on Monday, 6 July 2026.

The payment follows the agency’s standard monthly grant cycle and comes after April’s grant increases took effect.

Beneficiaries are encouraged to wait for confirmation that funds have been deposited before travelling to payment points or withdrawing money.

What Has Changed for Child Support Grant Eligibility?

One of the most significant developments is an increase in the means test thresholds used to determine eligibility.

The Child Support Grant is subject to an income-based means test, which assesses whether a caregiver qualifies for financial assistance.

According to information published on the revised requirements:

    New Monthly Income Limits

    Single caregivers

    • Previous limit: R5 100 per month
    • New limit: R5 800 per month

    Married caregivers

    • Previous combined limit: R10 200 per month
    • New combined limit: R11 600 per month

    New Annual Income Limits

    Single caregivers

    • R69 600 per year

    Married caregivers

    • R139 200 per year

Unlike the Older Persons Grant, the Child Support Grant does not include an asset test and is based primarily on household income.

How Much Is the Child Support Grant in 2026?

The Child Support Grant increased in April 2026.

    Eligible beneficiaries currently receive:

    Child Support Grant

    • R580 per child per month

This represents an increase from R560 previously.

The grant remains one of South Africa’s largest social assistance programmes and supports millions of children nationwide.

Other Children’s Grants Available Through SASSA

The Child Support Grant is not the only grant available to children and caregivers.

    Foster Child Grant

The Foster Child Grant is available to court-appointed foster parents caring for children placed in their care through legal processes.

The grant increased from R1 250 to R1 290 per month in 2026.

Only one Foster Child Grant may be claimed per eligible child.

    Care Dependency Grant

The Care Dependency Grant is designed for caregivers of children under 18 who have severe physical or mental disabilities.

    The grant currently pays:

    • R2 400 per month

This amount increased from R2 320 in April 2026.

Eligibility requires assessment and certification by a state-appointed medical practitioner recognised by SASSA.

SASSA Says Service Delivery Is Improving

SASSA has also reported improvements in service delivery at some of its offices.

According to the agency, new queue management systems and self-service kiosks have helped reduce waiting times for beneficiaries.

The agency claims many service points are now targeting maximum queue times of approximately 90 minutes.

The self-service kiosks allow beneficiaries to complete processes such as:

    • eLife verification
    • Biometric verification
    • Certain grant-related updates

SASSA has also reported faster processing times for some Child Support Grant applications compared with previous years.

Why These Changes Matter for Gauteng Families

Gauteng remains South Africa’s most populous province and is home to millions of children who depend on social assistance.

For many households, the Child Support Grant helps contribute towards:

    • School expenses
    • Food and groceries
    • Transport costs
    • Basic household necessities
    • Childcare needs

The increase in income thresholds means some caregivers who previously earned too much to qualify may now become eligible for support.

At a time when many households continue to face financial pressures, the revised thresholds could broaden access to assistance for low-income families.

How to Apply for the Child Support Grant

Parents and caregivers applying for the grant generally need:

    • South African identity document
    • Child’s birth certificate
    • Proof of income
    • Proof of marital status where applicable
    • Certified bank statements
    • Proof of residence

Applicants may be required to provide additional supporting documents depending on their circumstances.

Applications are processed through SASSA offices and approved beneficiaries receive payments directly through the agency’s payment systems.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

The revised income limits could allow more Gauteng caregivers to qualify for the Child Support Grant in 2026.

Families whose earnings previously exceeded the threshold by a small margin may now fall within the qualifying range.

The scheduled July payment date also provides certainty for beneficiaries who depend on grants to meet monthly household expenses.

For prospective applicants, the updated means test thresholds may be worth reviewing to determine whether they now qualify for support.

    What Happens Next?

SASSA is expected to continue processing new applications and reviewing beneficiary information throughout 2026. The agency is also continuing to roll out digital verification systems and queue management improvements aimed at reducing waiting times and improving service delivery.
