The Gauteng arts scene is buzzing as the acclaimed WGRUV Dance Company brings its latest production, Art Effect, to the Roodepoort Theatre from 5 to 7 November 2025.
After a successful run at the UJ Arts & Culture Venue in October, the show now heads west for three days of movement, rhythm, and storytelling. This is not just a dance recital. It’s an exploration of movement as language, emotion as narrative, and collaboration as pure art.
A Stage Alive with Emotion and Meaning
Led by Holly Gruver, founder and artistic director of WGRUV, Art Effect is designed as a mixed bill of short works woven together into one expressive evening. Each piece stands alone but connects through a common heartbeat: how art moves people and shapes communities.
Audiences will witness the meeting of international skill and South African creativity. It’s a rare chance for Gauteng’s theatre-goers to see world-class choreography without leaving home.

Four Choreographers, One Vision
The programme features works by Jessica Lang, Lauren Lovette, Roseline Wilkins, and Lex and Holly Gruver, each speaking through their own choreographic language.
Vivace Motifs, by Jessica Lang, re-imagines classical ballet for six dancers. Set to Handel and Corelli, it celebrates balance, symmetry, and the timeless beauty of form.
Postures, by Lex and Holly Gruver, takes inspiration from Johannesburg artist Greatjoy Ndlovu, whose charcoal figures capture emotion in motion. This work turns his drawings into dance, the body becoming both brush and canvas. It moves through strength, struggle, and the quiet power of hope.
In Game On, choreographer Lauren Lovette, a former principal with the New York City Ballet, brings playful energy and athleticism. Two dancers spar and sync, blurring the line between sport and art.
Closing the show, Rosie by Roseline Wilkins draws from African contemporary dance. With live percussion by Decius Pitjadi and Tommy Gruver, it pulses with rhythm and heart. The piece reflects identity, loss, and renewal through a deeply South African lens, grounding Art Effect in local soil while reaching for global emotion.

Art Effect bridges worlds. Lang and Lovette bring polished international style, while Wilkins and the Gruvers root their work in African rhythm and contemporary storytelling. Together, they create a dialogue between continents and cultures.

Performances run at the Roodepoort Theatre with a school’s matinee on Wednesday, 5 November at 2 pm, followed by evening shows on Thursday and Friday, 6 and 7 November at 7:30 pm.
