As South Africa ramps up its solar energy adoption, one challenge looms large: keeping solar panels clean and efficient. Enter solar panel cleaning drones: a game-changing technology designed to enhance photovoltaic (PV) performance, reduce maintenance risks, and conserve water. These high-tech drones are now being trialled and deployed across rooftops and solar farms, including those in dust-prone areas like Gauteng.

The Rising Demand for Efficient Solar Maintenance

South Africa, especially regions like Gauteng and the Northern Cape, experiences high levels of dust and pollen. This environmental buildup can reduce solar panel efficiency by up to 30%.

Traditionally, manual cleaning methods are time-consuming, hazardous, and water-intensive. As the solar industry grows, stakeholders are now seeking smarter, safer, and more scalable solutions. Drone-assisted cleaning is filling that gap.

Read more about SA’s first privately procured solar plant now operational, and its impact on the national grid.

How Solar Panel Cleaning Drones Work

Solar panel cleaning drones use low- or high-pressure spray systems, rotating brushes, or even downward airflow to dislodge dust and debris. These drones are designed for both rooftop and ground-mounted PV systems and offer impressive reach, up to 50 metres in height in some models.

For example, the Chronos system by Objectif Drone can clean 500 m² per hour, using a horizontal spray boom and RTK GPS for precise navigation.

“Drone cleaning not only saves time and cost, but also reduces water usage and risk,” says Ashish Bhaskar Hande, CEO of Indian Drone Research Pvt Ltd, in a Times of India report.

Advantages of Using Drones for PV Cleaning

Cleaning drones offer multiple benefits that are hard to ignore:

    1. Improved Efficiency

A study published on ScienceDirect showed that drones clean 40 times faster than manual methods. They can also achieve dust removal rates of over 90%.

    2. Enhanced Safety

Workers no longer need to climb onto steep rooftops or large-scale installations. Drones reduce fall risks and exposure to heat, making operations safer and more compliant with labour regulations.

    3. Water Conservation

In water-scarce regions like Gauteng, drones that use fine mist or airflow for cleaning are a sustainable option. Some systems can clean a 1 MW solar plant in under 30 minutes with minimal water usage.

Discover why Africa’s imports of Chinese solar panels jumps 60% due to renewables push and what it means for the continent’s energy future.

    Challenges and Considerations

Despite their benefits, solar panel cleaning drones face a few limitations:

    • Cost of initial investment may be high for small operators.
    • Licensing and operator training are essential to comply with aviation regulations.
    • Not all systems clean equally well—brushless models may be less effective in heavy dirt or bird droppings.

Furthermore, drone-based systems require routine calibration and maintenance, particularly in high-frequency operations.

    Local Adoption in South Africa

While drone use in solar cleaning is still emerging in South Africa, momentum is building. Companies in Cape Town, Johannesburg, and Pretoria are now exploring pilot programmes, especially for commercial and municipal rooftop arrays.

With government incentives such as the Section 12B tax benefit for renewable energy, adopting this technology may soon become standard in industrial-scale solar deployments.

    The Future of Solar Maintenance

Autonomous drones, powered by solar energy themselves, are already being tested. A three-rotor system developed by researchers and featured in the Euro-Mediterranean Journal for Environmental Integration includes self-adjusting water spray, brushes, and real-time obstacle detection.

These innovations will not only increase solar energy output but also reduce long-term operational costs for energy producers.

Uncover the facts as Eskom misleads on solar rules: SA standards already in place, challenging the utility’s recent claims.

A Clearer Path to Renewable Efficiency

As the solar sector grows in South Africa, maintenance technologies like solar panel cleaning drones are becoming essential. Their ability to reduce costs, improve safety, and boost energy output positions them as a valuable investment for PV system owners.

For Gauteng residents and businesses investing in solar, drone technology may soon be as common as solar panels themselves.
