Parents and guardians applying for Grade 1 and Grade 8 placements for the 2027 school year can receive free assistance at one of the Gauteng Department of Education’s decentralised walk in centres across the province. The centres are available throughout the 2027 Online GDE Admissions application period, which opened on 5 August 2026 and closes on 4 September 2026.

The walk in centres are designed to help parents who need assistance with completing online applications, uploading supporting documents or navigating the admissions system. According to the Gauteng Department of Education, the support network includes the GDE Head Office, district offices and designated decentralised walk in centres across Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng.

Parents are encouraged to apply as early as possible to avoid last minute delays before applications close.

What Are GDE Walk In Centres?

Although Gauteng school admissions are completed online, not every parent has access to a computer, reliable internet or the necessary technical support.

To assist applicants, the Gauteng Department of Education has established decentralised walk in centres where trained officials help parents complete their online applications.

    Officials can assist with:

    • Creating an online admissions profile.
    • Completing Grade 1 and Grade 8 applications.
    • Uploading supporting documents.
    • Answering application related questions.
    • Providing guidance throughout the admissions process.

The service is available free of charge.

    Johannesburg Region Walk In Centres

The Johannesburg Region has the largest number of decentralised walk in centres, serving communities across the central, east, west, north and south districts.

Parents living in areas including Soweto, Sandton, Midrand, Alexandra, Kensington, Randburg, Roodepoort, Norwood, Orange Farm, Lenasia and surrounding suburbs can access assistance at designated district offices, schools and teacher centres.

Parents can visit district offices, teacher centres and selected schools for assistance with their online applications.

    What Documents Will You Need?

Before visiting a walk in centre, parents should have the necessary supporting documents available.

    These typically include:

    • Parent or guardian’s South African ID, passport or permit.
    • Child’s birth certificate or passport.
    • Proof of home address.
    • Proof of work address where applicable.
    • Clinic card or immunisation record if requested.
    • Any additional supporting documents required by the Gauteng Department of Education.

Having these documents ready can help speed up the application process.

How to Apply for GDE Admissions 2027

Parents can complete applications online by visiting the Gauteng Department of Education Online Admissions portal.

    The process includes:

    • Creating or logging into your admissions profile.
    • Selecting preferred schools.
    • Completing the learner’s details.
    • Uploading supporting documents.
    • Submitting the application before the closing date.

Parents who experience difficulties can visit any decentralised walk in centre for assistance.

    Support Channels Available

Parents needing help with their applications can use the following official support channels:

    • Apply online through the Gauteng Department of Education Online Admissions portal.
    • Visit any decentralised walk in centre across Gauteng.

    Apply Before the Deadline

The 2027 Gauteng Online Admissions application period closes on Friday, 4 September 2026.

Late applications may only be considered after the official application window has closed and are subject to available placement.

Parents are encouraged to submit applications as early as possible.

What This Means for Gauteng Residents

The decentralised walk in centres make the online admissions process more accessible for parents who require assistance with technology or documentation.

By providing support across Johannesburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni and Sedibeng, the Gauteng Department of Education aims to ensure more families can complete their Grade 1 and Grade 8 applications before the closing date.

Applying early and making use of the available support services can help reduce last minute pressure and improve the overall admissions experience.
