Gauteng’s Golden Weekend Showcases the Power of Events to Drive Tourism, Growth and Global Visibility

Johannesburg, GAUTENG has once again demonstrated why it is Africa’s leading events destination, successfully hosting a blockbuster weekend of music, sport and aviation that attracted an estimated 195 000 attendees across the province and delivered a significant boost for tourism and the visitor economy.

Headlined by Scorpion Kings Live at FNB Stadium, which attracted more than 70 000 fans, alongside the Africa Aerospace and Defence Expo (AAD 2026) with an estimated 80 000 visitors, and the FIFA Intercontinental Cup clash between Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahli Saudi at a near-capacity Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Gauteng delivered a compelling showcase of its world-class hosting capabilities.

More than packed venues, the weekend demonstrated how major events stimulate travel, support businesses, create jobs and strengthen Gauteng’s global profile. The economic impact was visible across hotels, restaurants, guesthouses, township tourism operators, transport services, retailers, informal traders and entertainment precincts.

The Scorpion Kings Live experience alone is estimated to have generated R150 million in event revenue, with a further R49 million flowing into the local economy through accommodation, transport, food, merchandise and visitor spending. More than 2 300 jobs were supported through the event value chain.

The event also reinforced Gauteng’s positioning as the global home of Amapiano. As the genre continues to dominate stages, playlists and dance floors around the world, Gauteng remains its cultural birthplace, creative engine and commercial home. What unfolded at FNB Stadium was more than a concert. It was a global cultural homecoming.

On the sporting front, Mamelodi Sundowns’ victory in the FIFA Intercontinental Cup further elevated Gauteng’s international profile, while the successful hosting of AAD 2026 demonstrated the province’s strength as a business events and exhibition destination. Together, these events showcased Gauteng’s ability to host cultural, sporting and business mega-events simultaneously.

The success of the weekend reflects the Gauteng Provincial Government’s deliberate strategy of investing in and attracting high-impact events that drive tourism growth, destination competitiveness and economic development. At a time when domestic travellers remain under financial pressure, quality events provide compelling reasons to travel, stay longer and spend more. Central to this success is Gauteng’s integrated mobility network. The Gautrain, supported by public transport and e-hailing partners, continues to connect visitors to airports, attractions, business districts and event venues, making movement across the province seamless and efficient.

Most importantly, the weekend once again highlighted Gauteng’s greatest asset: its people. From Soweto to Mamelodi, Sandton to Tshwane, residents welcomed visitors with warmth, energy and hospitality, reaffirming their role as the province’s champion hosts. And the momentum continues. This week Gauteng welcomes Comic Con Africa 2026, expected to attract more than 70 000 visitors, alongside the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz and Marble Circus, further cementing the province’s status as South Africa’s cultural capital and the continent’s most dynamic events destination.
