Youth Empowerment and Urban Renewal Ahead of the G20 Summit

As the world prepares to focus its attention on South Africa for the upcoming G20 Summit, an inspiring new chapter is unfolding in Johannesburg. Beyond politics and policies, a remarkable story of urban renewal and youth empowerment captures hearts and minds. Leading this movement is the International Tourism Film Festival Africa (ITFFA). Accompanied by the dynamic grassroots initiative Jozi My Jozi, supported by key industry visionaries from Nikon SA, Premium Brands, and Panavision & Panalux.

A Transformative Partnership: ITFFA and Jozi My Jozi

Jozi My Jozi is a community-driven project that breathes new life into the city’s iconic neighborhoods like Maboneng and Hillbrow. Johannesburg will be seen through the lens of its youth, thanks to the powerful collaboration with ITFFA.

Through this initiative, local youth will receive specialized training in filmmaking, storytelling, cinematography, and editing. This is due to the Youth Creative Skills Centre (YCSC). These skills empower young filmmakers to document their city’s transformation, offering an authentic narrative of Johannesburg’s evolution.

“Johannesburg is rich in creativity and cultural diversity. There are so many stories to be told,” said Dawn Robertson from Jozi My Jozi. “By giving our youth a platform to share these stories, we ensure the world sees Johannesburg in a new light. One that reflects the true spirit and resilience of its people.”

Showcasing Johannesburg to the World Stage

The G20 Summit provides Johannesburg with a unique opportunity to showcase its transformation to a global audience. With the world’s most influential leaders converging in South Africa, the narrative captured by Johannesburg’s youth will serve as a powerful statement about South Africa’s potential, resilience, and innovation.

Youth-created content highlighting areas like Maboneng will be shared with G20 delegates and international visitors. This presents Johannesburg as a vibrant hub of tourism, culture, and economic growth. The initiative reinforces the message that urban regeneration is not just about restoring buildings. Urban regeneration is about rejuvenating communities, creating jobs, and inspiring future generations.

Industry Leaders Drive Johannesburg’s Renaissance

The success of “Revitalising Joburg” hinges on the unwavering support from visionary leaders in the creative and business sectors. Champions such as Christine Norton from Premium Brands, Nikon SA, and Nicholas Doble and Matthew Maclennan from Panavision & Panalux have come together to ensure that the youth have access to world-class equipment, mentorship, and opportunities.

“At Nikon, we believe in the power of visual storytelling to inspire and educate,” said a spokesperson for Nikon SA. “We’re proud to provide the next generation of filmmakers with the equipment and training they need to tell their stories and showcase the positive changes happening in Johannesburg.”

Matthew Maclennan of Panavision & Panalux echoed this sentiment, adding, “This is more than an investment in film equipment—it’s about investing in the future of our industry and the youth who will shape it.”

Their commitment reflects a shared belief: empowering youth with skills and opportunities today builds a brighter, more inclusive Johannesburg tomorrow.

The Broader Impact: Urban Renewal as a Catalyst for Economic Growth

Urban renewal is a critical driver of social cohesion, tourism, job creation, and economic development. By revitalizing areas like Maboneng, Johannesburg is not only reclaiming its place as a cultural capital but also creating an environment that attracts local and international investment.

Through initiatives like “Revitalising Joburg,” the city is positioning itself as a model of sustainable urban development. Young creatives ensure that Johannesburg’s story will be told with authenticity, passion, and innovation—qualities that will resonate with global audiences and investors alike.
