Gauteng residents are in for a weekend of sunshine, heat, and possible thundershowers, as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) forecasts hot and unstable spring weather across the province.
Meteorologist Lehlohonolo Thobela said both Johannesburg and Pretoria will experience partly cloudy conditions with afternoon thundershowers on Saturday and Sunday. The shift marks the start of the rainy summer season, when humidity, heat, and short bursts of rain become more common across Gauteng.
“It will be hot to very hot during the weekend, with a possibility of late thundershowers on both days,” Thobela said. “We are not experiencing a heatwave, but people should be careful, drink plenty of water, and stay out of the sun for extended periods.”
Pretoria: Hot Days, Humid Nights, and Possible Evening Rain
Pretoria will start Saturday clear and hot, with morning temperatures around 15°C and highs reaching 29°C by mid-afternoon. Thundershowers are likely to develop later in the evening, bringing light rainfall of about 3mm and a 30% chance of rain.
Humidity will be high early in the day (around 70%), drop to 35% in the afternoon, and increase again in the evening as moisture builds up before the rain. Winds will shift from east-northeast in the morning to west-southwest by nightfall.
Sunday will feel warmer and more humid, with temperatures ranging between 15°C and 31°C. There’s a 60% chance of late-afternoon thunderstorms, accompanied by light winds and sticky conditions throughout the day.
Johannesburg: Scattered Showers and Slightly Cooler Weather
Johannesburg will be cooler than Pretoria, but residents should still prepare for rain on both days.
On Saturday, temperatures will range between 14°C and 25°C, with a 60% chance of rain and around 5mm of precipitation expected. Winds will move from northerly to west-northwesterly, while humidity will drop from 75% in the morning to 40% by late afternoon.
By Sunday, the city will warm slightly, peaking at 28°C, but scattered thundershowers remain in the forecast. There’s a 30% chance of rain, with winds shifting to a northeasterly direction and humidity climbing again in the evening as cloud cover increases.
“The weekend will bring the kind of weather we expect in mid-October, warm, wet, and with scattered showers,” Thobela said. “It’s part of the early summer rains that typically build over the interior.”
Warm, but Not a Heatwave
Despite temperatures nearing 30°C, SAWS confirmed that Gauteng is not experiencing a heatwave.
Thobela explained that a heatwave occurs when maximum temperatures exceed the seasonal average by 5°C or more for at least three consecutive days. This weekend’s conditions don’t meet that threshold.
“The province is experiencing typical hot spring weather,” he said. “Since it’s still early in the season, rainfall and thunder activity will come and go, but no heatwave has been recorded.”
He urged residents to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors during peak heat, and avoid open flames, especially in open velds or informal settlements, where fire risks remain high.
More Rain Expected as Summer Draws Near
The South African Weather Service expects more consistent rainfall over the coming weeks as the province transitions fully into its summer rainfall cycle.
This period often brings short, heavy thundershowers, lightning, and occasional hailstorms, especially in the late afternoons. SAWS forecasts increasing rainfall activity toward the end of October, mainly across Johannesburg, Tshwane, and the West Rand.
“We are heading into that time of year when the air becomes unstable,” Thobela said. “Rainfall will start picking up in the next few weeks, bringing relief after the dry, windy spell Gauteng has faced.”
Keep an Eye on the Sky
No severe weather alerts have been issued, but residents planning outdoor events, from sports and markets to festivals, are advised to monitor live weather reports and prepare for possible late-afternoon thundershowers.
Motorists should also be cautious on the roads, as sudden downpours can reduce visibility and make surfaces slippery, particularly on highways and intersections.
