Key Responsibilities
As a Psychiatry Registrar, your duties will be wide-ranging and vital for both the clinical setting and the academic environment:
- Clinical Assessment and Care: Conducting comprehensive clinical assessments of psychiatric patients, formulating, developing, and executing evidence-based, compassionate care plans.
- Patient Management: Managing medical and psychiatric emergencies, providing counseling, and offering educational support to patients and their families.
- Service Delivery: Implementing cost-effective measures to ensure the efficient delivery of services.
- Administrative Duties: Maintaining proper clinical records, preparing referral letters, discharge summaries, and ensuring safe record-keeping of laboratory results.
- Work within a Multi-Disciplinary Team: Collaborating with various health professionals and adhering to ethical standards, punctuality, and professionalism in every aspect of your work.
- Academic Contributions: Participating in outreach, academic, and research programs, as well as conducting research under supervision for the MMED qualification.
- Teaching and Training: Supervising medical and undergraduate students, along with medical interns, and training in different psychotherapy modalities.
Requirements
To qualify for this position, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Educational Qualifications:
- A Grade 12 Certificate
- An appropriate medical qualification that allows for registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as an Independent Medical Practitioner.
- Completion of Community Service.
- Clinical Experience:
- A minimum of six months of clinical psychiatry experience at Gauteng Health facilities affiliated with the University of Witwatersrand academic platform.
- Additional Qualifications (Preferred but not essential):
- Part 1 of the FC Psych (SA) qualification and/or the Diploma in Mental Health will be advantageous.
- Current HPCSA Registration:
- Candidates must be registered with the HPCSA for the 2025/2026 financial year.
- Other Skills:
- Commitment to high-quality care and professionalism.
- Willingness to work extended hours, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, to ensure continuous care for patients.
- Ability to work well within a multi-disciplinary team and report conflicts of interest.
