South Africa’s Gauteng province is currently facing scheduled power cuts lasting between five and six hours, announced by Eskom for the week of 8 to 14 September 2025. These planned outages form part of Eskom’s load reduction schedule to manage the electricity grid during peak demand. Several areas across Gauteng are affected, with power cuts scheduled in the early mornings and evenings. Understanding the schedule and preparing for these outages is essential for households and businesses impacted by the interruptions.

What is Causing the Power Cuts?

Eskom implements load reduction or load shedding to balance the country’s electricity supply and demand. When demand exceeds supply, Eskom switches off power in certain areas temporarily to prevent total grid collapse. The continued power cuts in Gauteng reflect ongoing challenges in the national power system, including maintenance requirements and managing generation capacity.

Not all power cuts are the same. Gauteng Power Cuts Explained: Load Reduction and Load Shedding Compared. Learn the difference between load reduction and load shedding, and how each affects your household and business.

    Eskom’s Progress and System Stability

Despite scheduled outages, Eskom has reported stability improvements in the power system this year. Efforts are underway to increase generation capacity and reduce unplanned breakdowns. Eskom’s Generation Recovery Plan has contributed to decreases in load shedding compared to previous years. However, challenges persist, requiring continued load management.

    • Since 2023, a total of 7 800MW of capacity has been restored through the completion of long-term outages and new builds, including 1 400MW from Medupi Unit 4 and Kusile Unit 6 added this year.
    • Approximately 1 900MW reduction in peak planned maintenance this summer, following the completion of major planned outages during 2024 and early 2025, allowing for smoother execution.

    How Eskom Manages These Outages

Eskom’s load reduction schedule is designed to reduce pressure on transformers and the national grid. While outages might disrupt daily routines, they help maintain overall power system stability. The power utility is also involved in ongoing maintenance work to upgrade infrastructure, aiming for fewer unplanned breakdowns in the future.

Between 29 August and 4 September 2025, planned maintenance increased as we entered the summer period, averaging 4 946MW. During this period, the Energy Availability Factor (EAF) fluctuated consistently between 64% and 75%, with the month-to-date average rising beyond the 70% mark to 73.01%. This upward trend reflects growing stability and improved reliability across the generation fleet. These figures exclude Kusile Unit 6, which has been contributing 720MW to the national grid since 23 March 2025. Although not yet in commercial operation, the unit is expected to reach that milestone by September 2025.

To further strengthen grid stability, Eskom is planning to return a total of 3 738MW of generation capacity to service ahead of the evening peak on Monday, 8 September 2025, and throughout the coming week.

Confused by all the load shedding stages? Stage Who? Decoding Gauteng’s Load Shedding Jargon Once and for All. Here’s a clear guide to understanding the jargon and what each stage really means for you.

    Preparing for Load Shedding

Residents and businesses can adopt practical measures to cope with these extended power outages:

    • Charge all devices overnight to maintain communication during blackouts.
    • Keep backup lighting such as candles or battery-powered lamps ready.
    • Plan meals and activities around scheduled outages when possible.
    • Use emergency kits with essentials like water, food, and medical supplies.
    • Support local businesses that use generators during power cuts.

Duration and Timing of Power Cuts in Gauteng

The power cuts vary between five and six hours depending on the location. Morning outages typically start around 5am and end by 9am, while evening outages happen between 5pm and 10pm. These timeframes cover peak consumption periods when electricity use surges. For example, residents in Dobsonville, Naledi, Wattville, and Sebokeng face blackouts from 5am to 9am, while areas like Mabopane and Vereeniging experience evening power cuts.

Areas Affected by the Scheduled Outages

According to Eskom’s load reduction schedule for the relevant week, affected locations include:

    • Dobsonville, Naledi, Wattville, Etwatwa, Mathibestad, Sebokeng (morning outages)
    • Mabopane, Rabie Ridge, Duduza, Protea Glen, Westonaria, Vereeniging, Sharpville, Daveyton, Orange Farm (evening outages)
    • Additional regions such as Odenburg Gardens, Diepsloot, Garankuwa, Mabuya, Zonkizizwe, Katlehong, and Meadowlands will also experience planned cuts.

The schedule rotates over seven days, distributing outages between different communities to manage grid load evenly.

Impact on Daily Life and Business

Extended Eskom power cuts of five to six hours can significantly affect daily activities. Cooking, working, studying, and entertainment all depend on electricity. Businesses may face interruptions, especially those reliant on electronic systems and refrigeration. Planning is vital to minimise these disruptions and maintain productivity.

Power cuts continue to disrupt operations, reduce productivity, and strain profitability. How Load Shedding Impacts Small Businesses in Gauteng. Discover how small businesses are coping and adapting to keep their doors open.

The Importance of Load Reduction for the Future

Load shedding protects South Africa’s national grid from catastrophic failure by reducing demand temporarily. Though inconvenient, load reduction allows Eskom to maintain supply for longer periods and enables critical maintenance work that prevents more severe outages.

How to Stay Updated on Power Cuts

Eskom regularly updates load shedding schedules on its website and social media platforms. Residents should verify timings for their specific areas and use official sources for the most current information. Websites providing area-specific schedules, such as Gauteng’s municipal power suppliers, also offer valuable guidance.

    Community Support During Power Cuts

Community groups often share tips and support during load shedding periods. Networks provide information about safe generator use and identify businesses with backup power for services during outages. Strong community cooperation helps ease the impact of scheduled blackouts.

    Reducing Power Cuts in Gauteng

While the current extended power cuts pose challenges, Eskom continues to invest in infrastructure upgrades and system resilience. With strategic planning and ongoing improvements, Gauteng residents can expect more reliable electricity in the coming years. Understanding the schedule and preparing accordingly empower individuals and communities to navigate these temporary power cuts confidently.
